Philipp Herinrich Erlebch: Ouvertüres; Sonatas
$18.94 Andrea Bocelli's 2009 My Christmas album finds the Italian tenor performing various classic holiday-themed songs that touch on a mix of classical, opera, and pop. Included are such well-known holiday songs as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "O Tannenbaum," and "Silent Night." The versatile Bocelli also delves into such iconic Christmas hits as "Blue Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" (featuring a duet with Natalie Cole). Of course, the opera and classic songs are Bocelli's bread and butter, and here listeners get such lavishly produced cuts as "Adeste Fidelis," "Cantique del Noel," and "Caro Gesu Bambino." My Christmas is not only a warm and inviting holiday album, but also a superb classical crossover entry worthy of Bocelli's discography. ~ Matt Collar

| | Saturday Looks Good To Me Fill Up The Room CD (2007)
Philipp Herinrich Erlebch: Ouvertüres; Sonatas
$12.19 Mere months after the 2007 release of the moody COLD COLORS EP, Saturday Looks Good to Me unveiled its fourth full-length outing, FILL UP THE ROOM. Easily the indie-pop collective's most ambitious and expansive album, this 11-track set often recalls a more restrained Arcade Fire, particularly on the restless "When I Lose My Eyes," which vibrates with tense guitar-and-drum lines, and the dreamy "Make a Plan," a tune that calls attention to frontman Fred Thomas's laid-back, though slightly disarming, charisma and the ensemble's inventive arrangements. Although ROOM marks a departure from the group's longtime label, Polyvinyl, SLGTM seems to have embraced its new home--K Records--with verve, as evinced by the assured and adventurous nature of the record.

| | Harlots Betryaer CD (2007) (Import) Japan
Philipp Herinrich Erlebch: Ouvertüres; Sonatas
$12.05 As was the case with their first two albums, Harlots' third opus, Betrayer, stands at the crossroads where savagery and civilization collide, producing a grand cacophony of post-math-metal intricacy as impenetrable for its instrumental complexity as for its sheer, unhinged brutality. In other words, it's hard to decide whether listeners should be encouraged to bring a musical theory textbook or a battle axe when approaching Betrayer, but they better be ready for a challenge, that's for sure. For you see, as punishing as they are on the ears and body (just in case anyone is reading this in the mosh pit), exemplary poundings like "Building an Empire Towards Destruction," "The Weight Unweighable" (did we mention the lyrics are tricky too?), and the grinding "Concept of Existence," provide multiple levels of intellectual study for those who are able to withstand the beating. Those who cannot will simply have to make do with brief snatches of harmonic resolution sprinkled amidst the sonic discord reigning memorable fare like "Avada Kedavra," "Full Boy Contortion," and "This Is a Test, No Flesh Should be Spared." Finally, we have a few unusual detours into relative bliss with the eight-minute "Dried Up Goliathan" and the atmospheric, 12-minute epic, "Suicide Medley" -- both of which set aside all that extra room for some clean vocals and weave buckets of melodic lines (albeit twisted ones) around one another, instead of the typical crushing riffs, ragged croaks, and bloodied body parts. For the most part though, Harlots most certainly like it rough, so ...
