| | Underworld Oblivion With Bells CD - Import Underworld Discography of CDs
In the faceless, club-driven, one-track world of techno, Underworld is one of the few groups to have achieved name recognition and serious album sales. The peak of their success came in the 1990s with their acclaimed release DUBNOBASSWITHMYHEADMAN, and the appearance of the single "Born Slippy" on the TRAINSPOTTING soundtrack. Underworld's driving, trippy acid house techno was emblematic of the rave culture and sensibility, and the band continued in this stylistic vein through the '90s and into the 2000s.
OBLIVION WITH BELLS (2007) traverses the same territory. Reflexively, one might criticize Underworld's lack of musical evolution, but the sounds here are as hypnotic as ever, mixing metronomic precision with elements of electro, industrial, tribal, hip-hop, and classic new wave influences. Karl Hyde steadies the swirling brew with his deadpan, often processed recitations, giving the whole the feel of a feverish, pulsing dream in which someone is trying to communicate from the beyond. The resonant opener, "Crocodile," and rhythmically explosive "Beautiful Burnout" are cases in point. While not a crucial release, it is sure to please devotees of the genre.Spin (p.126) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] beats that loop below cooing guitar and/or keyboards, or are submerged into the muted synth-pulse." Uncut (p.129) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Hyde sounds like the missing link between JG Ballard and Mike Skinner. This is a finely polished album..." Alternative Press (p.176) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[This album] showcases a more refined approach....They're more preoccupied with moving listeners to sob with melancholy mood pieces and heart-tugging melodies." | | Organ Grab That Gun CD (2004)
Oblivion With Bells music CDs
$12.85 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves that the band has plenty of room for expression within its rather limited palette of droning organs, succinct drumming and sharp, upturned guitar lines that give new meaning to the term "hook." While this sound comes from the legacy of '80s college rock -- at times suggesting a fusion of the Smiths' witty, bouncy melancholy and the on-the-sleeve passion of Throwing Muses -- and also has ties to some of the other bands remaking new wave and post-punk in their own images, the Organ and ...
| | Killing Floor CD (1995) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Oblivion With Bells songs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in a heavy cardboard gatefold sleeve, and killer sound. This is a raw, immediate, overdriven, psychedelic blues record that offers an interesting historical counterpoint to the immediate impact of Page and Plant and Co., but it also offers a great contrast to the recent 1990s versions of American groups trying to rock up the blues in like style: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion immediately ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Oblivion With Bells album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her adventures, bringing an important change of pace to that popular band's hits. The jacket looks like a dusty old family ...
| | Legend CD (2007) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Oblivion With Bells CD music
$16.59 In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is a clear indication that Jupp is a pub rocker, a guy who specializes in laid-back good times, so it shouldn't come as a great surprise that his first band, Legend, was proto-pub, an unabashed celebration of old-time rock & roll, filled with three-chord Chuck Berry rockers and doo wop backing vocals. Nevertheless, listening to their 1970 LP is a bit of a shock, as it's completely disassociated with anything that was happening in 1970, even with Tony Visconti enlisted as their producer. Legend's sensibility is ahead of its time in its retro thinking, pointing the way to the rock & roll revival of the late '70s and not even that similar to the country-rock of Eggs Over Easy or ...
