Personnel: Matt Costa (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Jacob Sahagen (guitar, banjo, keyboards); Mitchell Townsend (guitar, bass guitar); Adam Merrin (keyboards); Bob Thompson (bass guitar); James Fetcher (drums, percussion). By sticking to the recipe that made SONGS WE SING such a solid debut, Matt Costa plays it safe--unusual for a former pro-skateboarder--on his sophomore outing UNFAMILIAR FACES. With instantly familiar hooks and direct, REVOLVER-esque production choices (courtesy of producer Tom Dumont of No Doubt) the album has many of the touchstones of the Jack Johnson school of indie pop. And while Costa's easy-on-the-ears material ( "Lilacs" and "Vienna") doesn't revolutionize the form, the album punches through on the strength of his alluring vocals, which resonate like a sun-kissed, California answer to Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch. Matt Costa's sophomore effort, Unfamiliar Faces, finds the singer/songwriter delving into similar territory to his 2006 debut, Songs We Sing, crafting hummable, somewhat intricate AM pop-influenced tracks. As with other similarly inclined artists like Josh Rouse, Costa trades in a kind of grab bag, post-alternative rock singer/songwriter style that references '80s British icons like Morrissey and the Cure as much as it does classic singer/songwriter and sunshine pop touchstones like Todd Rundgren, Brian Wilson, Jackson Browne, and others. A pleasant presence on record, Costa's vocal style does bring to mind a mix of the Shins' James Mercer and the Decemberists' Colin Meloy, and admittedly his odd penchant for affecting a British accent is a bit annoying -- he's from California for gosh sake. That said, tracks like "Mr. Pitiful" and "Cigarette Eyes" are immediately catchy and radio-ready singles that display Costa's obvious knack for Brit-pop-inspired songcraft. Similarly, such atmospheric and melancholy affairs as the very Smiths-sequel "Vienna" and countryish "Never Looking Back" are affecting and moving ballads perfect for the afterglow set. ~ Matt CollarEntertainment Weekly (p.83) - "With a plucky guitar, harmonica, piano, and sun-burnished vocals, Costa knows how to work gospel's euphoric uplift into secular music." -- Grade: B+ Q (Magazine) (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Costa has refined his art and taken a giant leap forwards. His second album is braver and more expansive." Discovered by No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont and championed by famously laid-back neo-folkie Jack Johnson, young Huntington Beach, California-based singer/songwriter Matt Costa offers up a surprisingly eclectic, mature, and elegant debut with 2006's SONGS WE SING. Like his considerably more melancholy precursor Elliott Smith, Costa mixes delicate acoustic melodies (the lush, Nick Drake-like "Astair") with occasional rocked-out moments (the lurching "Sweet ...

Unfamiliar Faces
$9.09 Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Donald Bailey (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 25, 1960. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. Japanese 24bit digitally remastered limited edition in an LP style slipcase. Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Authors: Ira Gitler; Bob Blumenthal. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (04/25/1960). Photographer: Francis Wolff. Back at the Chicken Shack is one of organist Jimmy Smith's classic Blue Note sessions, and the first to draw attention to tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. Recorded in 1960 with Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums, and Turrentine, the group reaches the peak of funky soul-jazz that all other challengers of the genre would have to live up to. Included on this uptempo session is a reworking of "When I Grow Too Old to Dream" (a feature for Turrentine), Turrentine's "Minor Chant," two Smith compositions, "Messy Bessie" as well as the set's notable title cut, and the CD-only bonus track, "On the Sunny Side of the Street." Smith's Midnight Special album was recorded at these same sessions, and is also exceptional. ~ Al Campbell This disc, along with MIDNIGHT SPECIAL and HOME COOKIN', is one of the truly classic albums Smith recorded for Blue Note. Introducing Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, whose warm, old-school playing blends perfectly with the oozing grooves of Smith's Hammond, BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK also features regular sidemen Kenny Burrell on guitar and beatkeeper Donald Bailey. Smith's innovative concoction of soul, jazz and ...
