Known more for his brutal visions of criminality, like THE BAD LIEUTENANT and KING OF NEW YORK, notoriously feisty director Abel Ferrara changes his tune with the unexpectedly comic and lighthearted GO GO TALES. This being an Abel Ferrara film, however, the setting is a cabaret club in downtown Manhattan, where the alcohol flows freely and the dancers are topless. Willem Dafoe plays Ray Ruby, a man who is on the verge of losing his one true passion in life. Not only is his crabby landlady (a hilarious Sylvia Miles) about to sell the space to Bed, Bath and Beyond, but his own brother, Johnie (Matthew Modine), has pulled the plug on his financing. But when Ray's pathetic last chance to keep the place alive--by purchasing a ridiculously large number of lottery tickets--appears to pay off, he discovers a new problem. He and his right hand man, the Baron (Bob Hoskins), can't find the winning ticket.
Ferrara's loose-cannon approach to filmmaking and life is a perfect match for this material, resulting in a freewheeling night-in-the-life movie that threatens to win over the most timid of viewers. For as graphic and raucous as the film gets, there remains an innocent, harmless air to the proceedings--even when controversial starlet Asia Argento's character takes the stage with her dog to unleash one of the most staggeringly inept stripteases the screen has ever seen. But stick around for the film's twist, for only then do all of the seemingly incongruous pieces fall into place and confirm the film's tender heart.

$14.45 THE PHILADELPHIA STORY boasts an incredible cast, but it's Katharine Hepburn's picture in more ways than one. Tracy Lord (Hepburn), a Philadelphia heiress, is about to marry coal-company executive George Kittridge (John Howard). The wedding, promising to be the season's premier event, attracts the attention of magazine publisher Sidney Kidd (Henry Daniell), who sees it as an opportunity to break a story. Spy magazine's Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), Lord's ex-husband, is enlisted to "gain access" to the party, along with top scandal writer Macauley Connor (James Stewart, in an Oscar-winning role). However, the reporter is quickly smitten by the bride's ...
| | Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Go Go Tales review
"Don't be poisoned by their lies," says Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez in the last line of THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED, referring to the way that the media corrupts the truth for the purpose of political persuasion. And thus the immediacy of this documentary--which consists of fast-moving footage captured during a two-day period in April 2002 when Chavez was kidnapped from the presidential palace in Caracas and the media announced a successful coup--serves simply as a good example of media manipulation. Using television news clips, the film shows how the privately owned Venezuelan media attacks Chavez, comparing him to Fidel Castro and accusing him of mental instability. Washington chimes in, accusing Chavez of being in cahoots with Columbian narco-terrorists. But the documentary also establishes Chavez's position as the people's president. He put in place a democratic constitution and promised to redistribute the nation's significant wealth--Venezuela is the world's fourth largest exporter ...

| | Curious Case Of Benjamin Button DVD (2008) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Go Go Tales review
$15.25 At once epic in scope and intimate in detail, David Fincher's THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is certainly the director's most emotional film to date (though FIGHT CLUB and SEVEN don't offer much in the way of competition). Loosely based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, this romantic drama tells the tale of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt), born in 1918 in New Orleans as a baby with wrinkles, cataracts, and arthritis. Benjamin will age backwards, getting younger as he watches those around him growing older. Included in that group are his adoptive mother, Queenie (Taraji P. Henson), and Daisy (Cate Blanchett), the love of his life whom he meets when she is just a little girl and he is an old man. They age in reverse, but despite Benjamin's globe-trotting adventures, their lives repeatedly intersect.
The script from Oscar winner Eric Roth bears more than a few hallmarks in common with his earlier work on FORREST GUMP: both adaptations ...
| | Traitor DVD (2008) DTS Sound
Go Go Tales DVD
$23.45 TRAITOR is writer/director Jeffrey Nachmanoff's powerful rumination on post-9/11 foreign affairs wrapped up into a taut contemporary spy thriller. Balancing the film's sometimes conflicted ideological heft is Don Cheadle, who turns in a smartly even-keeled performance as Samir Horn, a Sudanese-born, Chicago-raised former U.S. Army Special Forces operative. The action begins with a jarring prologue set in Sudan in 1978, where the young Samir witnesses the murder of his father by car bombing. Jumping swiftly to present day Yemen, Samir, in a dramatically ironic twist, is revealed as a mercenary selling explosives to Muslim extremists. But what is never completely clear throughout TRAITOR's numerous plot-twists is just where Horn's allegiances truly lie: is he an American spy ...
