In the faceless, club-driven, one-track world of techno, Underworld is one of the few groups to have achieved name recognition and serious album sales. The peak of their success came in the 1990s with their acclaimed release DUBNOBASSWITHMYHEADMAN, and the appearance of the single "Born Slippy" on the TRAINSPOTTING soundtrack. Underworld's driving, trippy acid house techno was emblematic of the rave culture and sensibility, and the band continued in this stylistic vein through the '90s and into the 2000s.
OBLIVION WITH BELLS (2007) traverses the same territory. Reflexively, one might criticize Underworld's lack of musical evolution, but the sounds here are as hypnotic as ever, mixing metronomic precision with elements of electro, industrial, tribal, hip-hop, and classic new wave influences. Karl Hyde steadies the swirling brew with his deadpan, often processed recitations, giving the whole the feel of a feverish, pulsing dream in which someone is trying to communicate from the beyond. The resonant opener, "Crocodile," and rhythmically explosive "Beautiful Burnout" are cases in point. While not a crucial release, it is sure to please devotees of the genre.
True to form, Underworld tread their own path through modern electronic music tipping a nod to current sounds, styles, and production techniques, but never afraid to let their songwriting and musicianship shine out in this digital world. This DVD/CD set draws heavily on Rick and Karl's vast array of musical influences and experiences performing worldwide to create a truly unique Underworld journey. The CD kicks off with Sven Vath, Simian Mobile Disco, and Frankie Knuckles all fighting to get on the decks, then takes you over the flat fields of rural Essex, through Kings Cross, ending blissed out in a hidden cove in Ibiza.Spin (p.126) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] beats that loop below cooing guitar and/or keyboards, or are submerged into the muted synth-pulse." Uncut (p.129) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Hyde sounds like the missing link between JG Ballard and Mike Skinner. This is a finely polished album..." Alternative Press (p.176) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[This album] showcases a more refined approach....They're more preoccupied with moving listeners to sob with melancholy mood pieces and heart-tugging melodies." $16.45 HISTORY OF BOB INGLISBob Inglis was discovered in the early 1970's.“I was at the Sign Great House in Jamaica performing in the dinner show. Tony Sylvester, producer and singer with the vocal group The Main Ingredients, approached me and complimented my musical style.” The Main Ingredients is well known for their hit Everybody Plays the Fool Sometime. At the time the song was number eight with a bullet headed for the number one hit in the country. Sylvester and family were at the dinner show celebrating the success of their song. Immediately, Sylvester recognized Inglis musical talent and invited him to join their band. Inglis first debut with The Main Ingredients was in August at Soul ‘73 opening for The Four Tops. Soul ‘73 was a black tie affair at the Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center. After this affair, the band also did a television special with Stevie Wonder, The Pointer Sisters, and Ashford and Simpson. During 1973-1974, Inglis also performed Christmas concerts with The Main Ingredients at the prestigious Apollo Theater . In winter of 1974, Bob Inglis left the band and returned to Jamaica. Here he opened and performed at Jamaican night clubs. In the later 1970's Bob returned to his well cherished home, America. He played a benefit concert for the Performing Arts Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The event was a $1000 a plate dinner with well honored guests such as the Tennessee governor. From 1977-1983 Bob Inglis did numerous recording sessions in California and New York. He worked with such prestigious musicians as Carlos Alomar (Dream Generator), James Gadson, Ron Brown, and Willie Bobo. Alan Sides, Andy Heermans, Mervin Loque, Johnny Rosen, and Hank Sancola engineered the recordings. In the late 1980's Inglis performed in Oaxaca City, Mexico. He excited audiences with his unique music at the renowned jazz club Las Chalotes. From 1983-1996 Inglis traveled between Florida, the Bahamas, and Europe promoting his Black Eagle CD. Renowned recording engineer/producer Andy Heermans and Inglis co- produced Black Eagle. Black Eagle is a commentary on the Iran Contra Affair. After a successful and active music career, Inglis retired in 1996. He moved to the quaint town of Melbourne Beach, Florida. Here he enjoyed his other loves-surfing the ocean waves and sailing his 36 foot trimaran. When he was not enjoying water sports, Inglis continued to enjoy his passion for music. He performed at the Florida Earth Day celebrations and the Surf Rider Foundation’s conventions. Inglis also enjoyed doing charity work. He played for severely handicapped children who did choreographed dances to his songs.“The children gave me the most pleasure. To see blind and disabled children enjoy my songs was a humbling experience. It was better than performing at ...

| | Shop Boyz Rockstar Mentality CD (2007) Edited
Oblivion With Bells music CDs
$12.65 Formed in 2004, the Atlanta-based trio known as Shop Boyz turned heads with their debut single, "Party Like a Rock Star," an irreverent anthem set to a slow crescendo of electric guitars. Continuing in the same vein, Meany, Fat, and Sheed set themselves aside from much of the ATL scene, displaying a tongue-in-cheek heavy-metal fetish on their debut album, ROCKSTAR MENTALITY.
Still, it's not all rap-core on this one--many of the album's cuts are standard Dirty South fare. Mimicking Young Jeezy with a bevy of guttural "yeeeaaahhhh"s littering their background vocals along with their own signature chants of "t-t-totally dude," the group is out to stymie the listening public's expectations. Featuring production from Dirty South mainstays like David Banner, ROCKSTAR MENTALITY is one of the more unusual albums to come out of the South.
Trying to capitalize on the success of the hybrid, the rap-influenced rock, or rock-influenced rap, that has brought success to bands like Linkin Park, OutKast, and Gnarls Barkley, Atlanta's Shop Boyz unleashed their very own brand of "hood rock," as they called it, into the world in the spring of 2007. Shortly before the group's album, Rockstar Mentality, was released, the single "Party Like a Rockstar" had reached number two on the Billboard Hot ...
