One of reggae's finest vocal harmony groups, the Gladiators brought their brand of soulful, rural roots to urban audiences from Kingston to London. Focusing on material from early on in their career, STUDIO ONE SINGLES gathers many great numbers produced by legendary producer and label-head Clement Dodd. Mixing sweet, gospel-influenced vocal harmonies with traditional Rastafarian themes, this is a fine collection of early roots reggae.
The Gladiators: Albert Griffiths (vocals, guitar); Clinton Fearon (vocals, bass guitar); Albert Friffiths, Errol Grandison, Gallimore Sutherland, DAVID WEBBER (vocals); Rick Frater, Clinton Rufus (guitar); Robert Lyn (piano); Richards Ace (organ); North Audley Street Choir Of Saint Marks Church (keyboards); Leroy Sibbles (bass guitar); Horsemouth Wallace, Phil Callender, Benbow (drums); Denzel Laing (percussion).
The Wire (p.71) - "[They] provided backing for some of the toughest and most righteous tunes in reggae....This set is a long time coming and truly one of the essential releases of the year." Dirty Linen (p.78) - "[T]he Gladiators were masters at laying down infectious grooves and often backed them up with memorable harmonies. This is, arguably, the best anthology on the market..." | | Marshall Tucker Band Where We All Belong CD (1974) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Studio One Singles
$10.69 Originally released on Capricorn Records (0145). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
Although it runs a little long, Where We All Belong captures the sound of The Marshall Tucker Band coming into its own. Half the tracks are new studio recordings, which are more focused than their previous releases; the other half is a harder-edged, jam-oriented live set. Taken together, they show that the band was progressing musically. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

$27.59 There certainly is no shortage of Jam anthologies on the market to appease the fan who needs everything (a massive five-CD box set) and the listener just wanting the greatest hits and nothing more (see Snap! for the most thorough portrait of the Jam's legacy). Gold falls in between the two poles by supplying one disc filled with 26 of their finest moments and a second disc of fan favorites, B-sides, and studio outtakes.
