On its first studio album since 2003's QUEBEC, the ever-mischievous Pennsylvania-based weirdos Ween unveil another set of skewed tunes that have seemingly been plucked from some strange Willy Wonka-like realm. After the willfully cheesy horn-led intro of "Fiesta," LA CUCARACHA drifts into the ether with the fantasy-themed "Blue Balloon," which, along with the likeminded "Spirit Walker," features the duo's signature tweaked vocals and quirky arrangements. Elsewhere Dean and Gene Ween mix things up with the twangy "Learnin' to Love" and the snotty punk-pop ditty "Shamemaker," capping things off with the slinky Bowie-like "Your Party," a track that boasts sax master David Sanborn. Largely staying within the same brightly colored palette as QUEBEC, LA CUCARACHA is a fine addition to Ween's gleefully bizarre catalogue.Uncut (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] hillbilly, vague psychedelia and house. 'Object' is a highlight, as is the lovely 'Sweetheart In The Summer'..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[S]imply let LA CUCARACHA happen and enjoy how much Gene and Dean toy with and transgress musical forms while still playing them to a high degree of invention, proficiency and sincerity." Blender (Magazine) (p.154) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "When it comes to creating nuanced and irreverent, yet oddly touching pop and rock simulacra, no one really touches [them]..." | La Cucaracha Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Ween are back with an instant classic There is no other band in the world that comes close to the diversity that Ween has to offer. This CD is no different. If you liked Chocolate & Cheese, you should like this one. Can't wait to see Ween play In Australia for the first time in 10 years - no support band, just 100% Ween. Sounds like heaven to me. Submitted by chrisbrown (Townsville, QLD, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Something new! Comapring it to the past recordings well Ween have a Queen sense of recording in that they want to keep it diverse and try not to stay the same. That is tough to do without losing your fans along the way but that is the price you pay when you want to change it up sometimes. Anyway, it is staying close to the more polished albums and not way off like the Pod. All in all it is a fun Ween listen and yes sounds toned down compared to the last 2 studio albums. But makes you wonder about all those outtakes for the records recording sessions. Hopefully some neat B-sides the band gives away from time to time but it does make you wonder if better songs could of made this a stronger record end result. Just an album i don't think many fans will go back to alot is all. Hope the next one will be a winner all around and blow everyone away on what they expect to hear. For now new stuff so dig into the brown and go on tour. Submitted by theMollusk (Underwater, Earth) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Their first disappointment. Ween very rarely disappoints, but unfortunately most of this record does just that. The band sounds as if they are revisiting "Chocolate & Cheese" territory but without the same quality of songwriting that masterpiece culminated. This album has its moments, like the hilarious emo spoof "Shamemaker", the sultry Bowie-does-jazz of "Your Party", and the gorgeous Motown throwback "Sweetheart In The Summer", but most of the rest of the album just sounds tired and - gasp - predictable. Ween fanatics probably won't mind that, but the uninitiated should first check "GodWeenSatan" and "Chocolate & Cheese" for the best of this group. This is NO Shinola Vol. 2 Some have been saying that this album sounds like Shinola Vol. 2, meaning it sounds like outtakes. This is not the case. This album is not as good as Quebec, but there is plenty here to become addicted after a couple listens. The Pod is still Ween's masterpiece, although this album was still worth the 4 year wait. Maybe it's just because I'm a true WEEN fan. Songs like "Your Party" will make you laugh and want to keep listening...... Submitted by James D. (Phoenix, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

La Cucaracha CD music
$18.79 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from ...

La Cucaracha music CDs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the ...

La Cucaracha songs
$18.75 In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is a clear indication that Jupp is a pub rocker, a guy who specializes in laid-back ...

La Cucaracha CD music
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What ...
