Bassist/composer Stanley Clarke was around at fusion's inception, playing with Chick Corea, George Duke, and many others. While other performers might have muddied fusion's waters with overindulgence and blandness, Clarke's TOYS OF MEN proves that it's still very much a viable musical route. Throughout, there's a balance of acoustic and electric instrumentation (Clarke even plays an acoustic bass guitar on some tracks), as well as moods both contemplative ("Back In The Woods") and darkly funky ("Game"). The six-part "Toys Of Men" even reflects some 1970's prog-rock influence. Old fans of fusion will likely be pleased with TOYS and fusion/jam band newbies should check it out as well.Down Beat (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he album presents a varied menu, complete with fantastic electric and acoustic bass solos, all against a surprisingly textural backdrop." JazzTimes (p.93) - "[H]e stretches his fabled chops to another level....Clarke's signature slap technique comes to the fore on funky vehicles like the super-charged 'Come On'..." | | Stereolab Cobra And Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night CD (1999)
Toys Of Men music CDs
$9.09 After an ear-pricking opening ("Fuses") peppered with hints of Art Ensemble of Chicago-like percussive free jazz, it's business as usual for Stereolab. For 1997's DOTS AND LOOPS, the group took cues from Mouse on Mars and Tortoise and assembled its distinctive synth whooshes and intricate but perfectly polished pop via hard-disc. COBRA brings performance back into play, with post-production duties split between High Llamas maestro Sean O'Hagan and Chicago avant-garde poster boys Jim O'Rourke and John McEntire. Stereolab makes their job easy by providing some of its most ambitious, sophisticated, yet unfailingly poppy compositions yet.

| | Meghan Cary Onion Dream CD (2001)
Toys Of Men songs
$18.25 Although 2001's Onion Dream isn't Meghan Cary's first release, it is the singer/songwriter's first full-length album; her first release, 1998's New Shoes, was an EP. For recording artists, full-length albums are more of a creative challenge than EPs because the artist needs to hold the listener's attention for a longer period of time. It is easier to be consistent for 21 minutes (which is how long New Shoes lasts) than for 47 minutes (which is how long Onion Dream lasts). But making the transition from an EP (or mini-album, to use a term that was popular in the '70s) to a full-length album was a challenge that Cary was obviously ready for. Onion Dream not only makes good on the promise of New Shoes, it is even stronger. Cary wrote all 11 of the songs on this CD, and her writing is solid on reflective, poignant tracks like "Sorrow's Waltz," "Quiet of the Lie," and "Lori's Song." Many of the tunes are melancholy, although the infectious "You Don't Know Me" demonstrates that Cary is quite capable of providing something that is upbeat and optimistic; it is one of the few tracks that thrives on feel-good optimism. Cary's influences remain the same; 10,000 Maniacs and Indigo Girls were prominent influences on New Shoes, and their influence is equally beneficial on Onion Dream. Cary, who plays acoustic guitar on some of the material, co-produced this CD with Kevin Lacy; thankfully, they don't over-produce. Cary has an earthy, unpretentious approach to folk-rock and Americana, and she does herself a favor by avoiding an overly slick production style on this impressive release. ~ Alex Henderson
"Perhaps the best thing about Cary is that she's neither superficial nor obnoxiously self-possessed....Seek this one out"--- Billboard Magazine"Cary is one of the brightest new faces on the music scene today."--- The Weekly News, Miami"Fresh and intoxicating"--- Street Sound"this extraordinary singer bares the talent of an old soul"--- Cups Magazine"Can the world stand one more storytelling troubadour? If the artist in question is Cary, the answer is a resounding YES."--- Billboard MagazineMeghan Cary is the teller ...

| | Delta Saxophone Quartet Dedicated To You But You Weren't Listening - The Music Of Soft Machine CD (2007)
Toys Of Men songs
$13.49 The concept of transposing the decidedly electric based music of Soft Machine to acoustic saxophone quartet may be a stretch for many. But considering the expansive, orchestral nature of their music, this idea proffered by the Delta Saxophone Quartet makes sense. Their collective sound does not as much tone down the compositions themselves as they were written, but instead gives them a fuller body minus the rock-ish bravado, and is very accessible to both jazz and classical music listeners. When Soft Machine went from the keyboard-oriented fusion edge of Mike Ratledge to the more symphonic influence of Karl Jenkins, some fans probably thought it was to their detriment. What the DSQ has done is reverse the notion that more was better, and have adapted the instrumentation within a quartet format, which was the strongest and most focused of the Soft Machine bands, minus eventual electric guitar. This cast of British woodwind players consists of Graeme Blevins on soprano sax, Chris Caldwell on baritone sax, Tim Holmes on tenor sax, and Pete Whyman on alto sax. They play homogeneously, blended together for the most part in tight arrangements with little or no soloing. Hugh Hopper guests on one track only, "Facelift," sporting the dramatic, elongated, industrial-flavored repeated and then developed signature melody lines that Ratledge played and Hopper reinforced. "Outrageous Moon," featuring the other guest, Morgan Fisher, is the most Canterbury style piece that still retains the influence of Ratledge, with watery vocals, live electronics, and the sound of the hurdy-gurdy. A pastoral, baroque style that Jenkins eventually explored is heard quite extensively on "Somehow with the Passage of Time" which is an adaptation of "King & Queens," as well as the dreamy "To," the 7/8 time signature identifying "Dedicated to You," the cricket chirpy "Aubade," "Noisette," where minimalism meets squawk, and "Epilogue." Perhaps in this vein "The Floating World" best represents the transition ...
