Ida Haendel Plays Mendelssohn And Stravinsky
$10.09 The 1952 NBC series Victory at Sea was one of the earliest network documentary series to capture the public's imagination in a serious way, and one of the more enduring offshoots was the music by Richard Rodgers, which was recorded by RCA-Victor in what ultimately became a series of four LPs. Rodgers was chosen by series producer Henry Salamon based on his being the "leading American composer of his day," a somewhat exalted (though understandable) judgement for a man who was most closely associated with the Broadway stage and Hollywood. The albums were popular, probably due in part to the fact that the music was accessible and unchallenging, and that it insinuated itself for months into the household of seemingly every American family that had someone fighting in World War II -- and that a lot of veterans owned stereo systems in the late '50s, and these recordings took full advantage of stereo's two-channel sound separation. As to the music itself, one finds on listening to it 40+ years later that a little goes a long way. Rodgers devised a straightforward melodic score whose most inspired moments (such as the main title theme) seem to have been lifted from the early work of Ralph Vaughan Williams. An astonishing amount of what is on this CD (which runs 67 minutes) is banal, predictable musical accompaniment, broken up with a few surprises, such as "Dangers Down Deep," which opens with an understated ...

| | Masters Of The Harp CD (2002)
Ida Haendel Plays Mendelssohn And Stravinsky
$22.09 A collection of various harp musics from around the world, this album attempts to cover all major harp traditions within the space of an hour. Roughly half of the artists featured hail from the ARC stables, with the other half being licensed work from the various labels involved. The focus is relatively more on the European end of the spectrum, but other cultures are also represented. Welsh and Celtic harps dominate the whole of the album, providing the opening in Robin Huw Bowen's arrangement of a piece for the Welsh triple harp. A Chinese piece follows, making the largest geographic distinction possible. The album then showcases its first bit of Celtic harp with a piece from Triskell. Galician music from Spain is represented by Emilio Cao, and then the album returns to Celtic harps, with a 30-string used by Robin Williamson in a piece from his Music for Macbeth album and a folk harp used by Golden Bough's Margie Butler. After another Galician outing, the divine Paraguayan harp is presented by Oscar Benito. After two runs through the realm of the classical harp, the album moves to Ravi, a multicultural performer using an electric kora to present a light, pensive number. Alfredo Ortiz provides another look at the Paraguayan harp, and the album finishes on Alan Stivell playing the Breton harp, an instrument lost since the Dark Ages and rediscovered/built by Stivell's father. The only really notable omissions here are that of the Burmese harp, a major tradition in its own ...

Ida Haendel Plays Mendelssohn And Stravinsky
$14.59 For his fifth Origin release, Brent Jensen includes some of the main Origin stable stars as members of his quartet, which shows off some impressive sensitivity to the music, with both classic pieces and new compositions from the bandmembers. Jensen continues his trademark relaxed sound on the soprano sax, pulling just the right notes out where he wants them. Drummer John Bishop largely stays in the background, but can come forward as called for by the tune (an excellent solo in the improvisational "Punt" shows this off, as well as an outstanding bass solo from Jeff Johnson). Pianist Bill Anschell becomes one of the stars here early, both from his own exceptional playing and his arrangements of a few classics. Aside from Jensen's Idaho heritage, this is Seattle jazz at its best -- there's some delicacy with the classic compositions and some contemporary stylings based around the key instruments, without the showiness of the New York scene or the overly lush arrangements of the Bay Area. Exceptional music all around. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Marc Copland Voices New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 2 CD (2007) (Import) Germany
Ida Haendel Plays Mendelssohn And Stravinsky
$16.39 New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 2: Voices is a sequel to Marc Copland's March 2006 date New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 1: Modinha, but with a slightly different lineup. Copland is still on acoustic piano, and Gary Peacock is still on upright bass; however, the drummer on Voices (which was recorded three months after Modinha) is Paul Motian instead of Modinha's drummer, Bill Stewart. Copland, Peacock, and Motian are certainly an appealing combination, and the three of them enjoy a consistently strong rapport on a 47-minute CD that is dominated by Copland and Peacock compositions. The only thing on this album that was not written by either Copland or Peacock is Miles Davis' "All Blues," which receives an unusually impressionistic treatment. Many other recordings of "All Blues" have favored a strong groove factor, but Copland's intriguing version chooses to probe and reflect rather than groove. Voices, which was recorded about two weeks after Copland's 58th birthday, does not go out of its way to be accessible; the performances tend to be on the cerebral side -- not cerebral ...
