Lena, A New Album album
$15.39 Non-classical concerts are a rarity at New York's Metropolitan Opera, and the venerable company had never hosted a female pop singer prior to inviting Barbara Cook (an old friend and supporter) to appear on January 20, 2006. The 3,700-seat house sold out without an advertisement being placed. DRG, Cook's longtime label, naturally recorded the show, which is more notable as an event than a performance, even though the singer is in typically strong voice. Of course, that voice is itself notable, coming from a 78-year-old woman, since it betrays very few signs of age. Working with a quintet led by pianist Eric Stern (the replacement for Wally Harper, who died in October 2004), Cook turns in a set full of familiar material, most of it drawn from vintage Broadway shows. On "Them There Eyes," Marcus Rojas joins her on tuba as she breaks out a kazoo. More seriously, she introduces guest Audra McDonald, who has the pipes to play the Met, although she humbly says she'd never have gotten there without the invitation from Cook. Faux-classical singer Josh Groban makes no such admission after Cook's generous introduction, even though it would be far more appropriate ...

| | Lee Wiley Night In Manhattan/Sings Vincent Youmans/Sings Irving Berlin CD (2001)
Lena, A New Album music CDs
$13.59 Although it took nearly half a century, vocalist Lee Wiley's most prolific and oft-requested post-World War II recordings have been compiled and reissued in their entirety. This single CD gathers Wiley's trio of 10" EPs cut for Columbia in the early '50s -- including the universally acclaimed Night in Manhattan (1951) as well as Sings Vincent Youmans (1951) and Sings Irving Berlin (1951). When these titles were first issued, Wiley had already experienced significant success as a traditional pop and torch vocalist during the '30s -- supported by, among others, the Dorseys, Johnny Green, and the Casa Loma Orchestra. Although all three of these titles could rightly be considered as concept or thematic collections, it was Night in Manhattan that truly captured the varied moods and sounds of New York City after hours. Wiley's distinct organic and full-bodied timbre animates songs such as "Any Time, Any Day, Anywhere" and "(I Don't Stand) A Ghost of a Chance (With You)" with an intangible sense of a forlorn soul. Accompanying Wiley on these sides are Bobby Hackett and Joe Bushkin & His Swinging Strings. The Youmans and Berlin sets -- which both feature Stan Freeman and Cy Walter -- build ...

$13.89 | | Cheryl Bentyne Let Me Off Uptown CD (2005)
Lena, A New Album songs
$15.29 Most jazz aficionados will rank Anita O'Day as one the very best vocalists that the genre had to offer in the 1940s and 1950s. Her satiny tone, natural sense of rhythm, and improvisational skills placed her alongside the elite voices of the day. Manhattan Transfer's Cheryl Bentyne recognizes O'Day's vocal contributions by paying tribute to the singer on her second Telarc Jazz release, Let Me Off Uptown. For those familiar with both O'Day and Bentyne, the pairing of the vocalists is practically ideal as Bentyne's technical skills, phrasing, and tone are often reminiscent of O'Day's in her earlier and best works. This is most apparent with Bentyne's version of "Pick Yourself Up." The ease with which she playfully recites the lyrics is haunted by O'Day's delivery, but it is not imitation. Bentyne simply, yet skillfully, sings the song unadorned by any vocal acrobatics and the result is a tasteful performance that allows a listener to not only relax and enjoy the vocalist, but also appreciate the melody of this Jerome Kern/Dorothy Fields classic. That natural gift is what O'Day gave to a great song, and Bentyne has acquired the same ability. If there is a difference, it is that Bentyne has ...

| | Peter, Paul & Mary See What Tomorrow Brings CD (1965)
Lena, A New Album CD music
$9.09 See What Tomorrow Brings is a strong album that plays to the strengths of Peter, Paul, & Mary. There is a good variety of material within their folk format, and a nice esprit de corps that pervades the recording. All members sing lead, which brings a good balance to the proceedings. Worth noting are two early versions of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" and Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Although there isn't one number that shouts instant classic, all cuts have something to recommend them. Lest we forget the trio's idealism, the opening song "If I Were Free" speaks to the hope of wars ending and the beginning of peaceful times. "Jane, Jane" and "Because All Men Are Brothers" show the group's ...
