| | Pupkulies & Rebecca Beyond The Cage CD Pupkulies & Rebecca Discography of CDs
Pupkulies & Rebecca's second full album together follows nicely in the vein of the first, a pleasantly understated version of current pop trends that reacts to the state of the art rather than trying to ignore it -- no small thing in an era of groups endlessly looking backward rather than around them. A song like "Some Gin" is the closest that the album gets to wanting to aim for the mainstream airwaves in a "this is now and this is robo-pop" sense -- it's not Kylie or Britney or Róisín Murphy, say, but the tension between multi-tracked vocals and a calm, almost hollow heart in the arrangement helps drive the overall song. Other songs that push forward rather than hold back include "Les Cages," with one of the best basslines on the disc, propulsive in the best way, while "Trust Me" aims not only for some classic slink but the full-on rocking of a cowbell, and why not? Elsewhere, restraint leads the way, a more subtly captivating minimalism -- "Pepper" is a prime example, beats clicking in the background, Rebecca Gropp's controlled vocal sass, the appearance of the bass just so, while the opening "Windmills" helps get the album going with a sweet little kick, echoed by "Mondgeflüster" at its conclusion, wrapping up Beyond the Cage on a high note. ~ Ned Raggett

Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this ...
| | Patrick Lamb Sunshine Alley CD
Beyond The Cage music CDs
$11.39 Saxman Lamb comes out like a lion - The Oregonian Review by marty Hughley, January 11, 2002From the time he began making a name for himself in the Portland music scene more than a decade ago, saxophonist Patrick Lamb-just out of Oregon Episcopal School, fresh-faced, earnest, and ambitious- has explored a variety of styles. He's worked on his straight-ahead jazz chops in quintets, jam sessions and the like. He's worked with contemporary jazz stars and blues veterans. The main direction of his career though, has been toward smooth jazz, which not only holds the best commercial prospects for a contemporary saxophonist but fits with Lamb's crowd-leaser musical personality. But that genre never seemed to spur Lamb to develop his artistic voice beyond the polishing of surfaces; even his gutsiest blowing could come across as facile (as eveidenced on "The Closer I Get," his album from about a year ago). But now out comes "Sunshine Alley," a bright, welcome sign that Lamb's decade of hard work and eclecticism have really paid off. Taking on the time-honored tradition of the organ trio, Lamb teams up with Hammond B3 player Louis Pain, best known for his work with Paul deLay's great blues band, and completes the circle alternately with Mel Brown or Jason Carter on drums. Steeped in the soul-jazz approach of the 1960's, this is music that proves you can be direct and accessible without ingratiating your way toward the lowest common denominator. And it takes advantage of the tonal warmth and openhearted phrasing at the same time that it pushes Lamb to dig a little deeper for the authentic expression.Friday's show to mark the album's release should be ...
