Shade is an outstanding album of contemporary jazz from (mostly) tenor saxman Richard Cole. This album opens with a bang and a slightly larger ensemble in something of a tribute to Joe Henderson. Cole, as well as trumpeters Thomas Marriott and Randy Brecker, take some outstanding solos here. In pianist Bill Anschell's composition "Moxy," the band slims down to a quartet and combines a frenetic piano with Monk-inspired horns. A Fender Rhodes is called into play, along with an extra guitar, for a laid-back groove through "Red Suit" (written by Cole's brother), which also gives Brecker another showing on the trumpet. From end to end, it's a fine album, with a good showcase of Cole's sax skills as well as a supporting cast with outstanding abilities and a constant groove. ~ Adam Greenberg
Richard Cole's latest recording showcases the versatile saxophonist in like-minded and stellar company. With trumpeter Randy Brecker again making an appearance, Shade is instantly compelling. Both rollicking and serene, Shade varies the program, from the

| | Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas CD (1977)
Shade music CDs
$11.65 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow

$12.89 Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. | | Miles Davis In A Silent Way CD (1969) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Shade album
$6.79 John McLaughlin (electric guitar); Dave Holland (bass); Tony Williams (drums).
With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral texture, in great reverberant washes of color and counterpoint.
The juxtaposition of groove and impressionistic drone movements creates the inner tension in each of the extended pieces--Miles' "Shhh/Peaceful" and Zawinul's "In A Silent Way/It's About Time." Newcomer John McLaughlin's lyric, sitar-like guitar sets a serene mood ...

$13.29 WHERE DREAMS COME TO DIE is the debut album by Australian band RED DESCENDING. The album expands on the melodic death metal genre and incorporates symphonic arrangements, industrial elements and the selected use of female vocals. The end result is a unique sound that is both dark and powerful. With their debut, RED DESCENDING achieved its aim of producing a sound that rivals the top metal bands that inspired them. The band accomplished this remarkable feat while still holding true to the do-it-yourself attitude bred into those hailing from the most isolated city in the world: Perth, Australia. Every step of the production, apart from the mastering process, was handled by a member ...
