Purchase Breakthrough CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Black Eyed Peas E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies) CD (2009)
Breakthrough album
$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned with THE E.N.D. (an acronym for "Energy Never Dies"), their third studio effort. Combining Will.I.Am's thumping 808 kick drum-infused beats with production assistance from a host of collaborators (including vocoder-loving Torontoians MSTRKRFT and French house veteran David Guetta), BEP's infectious party-time rhymes are an easy match for the album's Ed Banger-style of electro rapping and Auto Tune jamming, especially on lead-off single and sure-fire 2009 summer anthem "Boom Boom Pow."
Audio Remasterers: Chris Bellman; Brian "BC" Catena.
Arranger: will.i.am.
Personnel: Hal Ritson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); George Pajon (guitar); will.i.am (piano, synthesizer, drum programming); Printz Board (keyboards, synthesizer, bass synthesizer, drum programming); Adam Walder (keyboards).
Audio Mixers: Joe Peluso; Dylan Dresdow.

| | Cut Copy In Ghost Colours CD (2008)
Breakthrough music CDs
$8.95 Australian electro-pop outfit Cut Copy are among the legions of indie acts defecting en masse to the low-end thump of house music. While the patchwork quality of their debut, BRIGHT LIKE NEON LOVE, sounds like a band searching for an identity, their follow-up, IN GHOST COLOURS, is a more assured effort, revealing spirited pop songwriting chops amidst throbbing dance floor workouts. Pitched between the worlds of cheeky stadium rock-inspired irony and self-referential sampledelic electronica, Cut Copy's effusive crossover electro will win over pop fans of all persuasions.
| | Radian Chimeric CD (2009)
Breakthrough songs
$12.78 Austrian synth-bass-drums trio Radian has been making austere, arty post-rock (remember when that was a thing?) music since the late '90s. But unlike Tortoise or other, related acts, Radian has never seemed particularly interested in human concepts of beauty. In a way, their stark instrumental tracks recall Autechre more than any ordinary band -- alienation is as much a goal as a consequence of their steadily pulsing, jagged music. This new album, their first in five years, begins with the quite noisy, ugly "Git Cut Noise," which combines their usual thick bass and clicking drums with almost Einstürzende Neubauten-esque rattles, roars, and grinding sounds. This piece is revisited on "Git Cut Derivat," where it's reduced to quiet hums and ticking noises, almost perversely subtracting the very elements that seemed to define it in its first version. In between is the ten-minute "Feedbackmikro/City Lights," slightly less noisy than "Git Cut Noise" but even more trance-inducing and relentlessly restrained. The album's second half is more organic: "Chimera" features delicately plucked guitars and washes of cymbals, closer to electro-acoustic improvisation than post-rock, while "Kinetakt" offers barbed-wire guitar notes and scratchy bursts of noise over tribal/trash-can drumming that, combined, recalls Sonic Youth's Sister, a mood that's sustained on album closer "Subcolors," though that track adds vibe-like sounds and hissing drums for an almost jazzy feel. This is a unique if occasionally discomfiting album that finds great beauty in surprising places. ~ Phil Freeman
Personnel: Martin Brandlmayr (vibraphone, drums, sampler).

| | Tangerine Dream Rubycon CD (1975)
Breakthrough album
$8.85 RUBYCON is an undisputed classic in the vast Tangerine Dream canon, referenced by many of the new electronica generation. But at the time of its creation, Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann were themselves young men experimenting with technology.
RUBYCON is split into two sections, both of which offer the band's trademark mix of ululating sequencers, ghostly synthetic twilight, and mysterious electronic effects. Part One begins with intergalactic whispers, before coalescing into one of the Dream's most uniquely designed rhythm patterns. Part Two moves the sequencers' BPMs up a notch, matching them with whistling electronics and howling, deep space atmospheres. Truly astonishing stuff, and essential to anyone interested in the advancement of both electronic music and Krautrock in general.
Recorded at The Manor, Shipton On Cherwell, England in January 1975.
Composers: Christopher Franke; Edgar Froese; Peter Baumann.
Personnel: Edgar Froese (guitar, organ, Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer, gong); Peter Baumann (piano, electric piano, organ, keyboards, synthesizer, ARP synthesizer); Christopher Franke (piano, organ, synthesizer, Moog synthesizer, gong).

| | Grandmaster Flash Essential Mix: Classic Edition CD (2002)
Breakthrough CD music
$5.95 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Grandmaster Flash.
This is not a collection of classic Grandmaster Flash 12-inch jams from back in the day (try the essential MESSAGE FROM BEAT STREET for that) but Grandmaster Flash's own live mix of 16 classic dance tracks from the 1970s and '80s, combined on the master's own deck. It is a rather brilliant selection of tracks, from the pop fluff of Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait" (containing possibly the coolest synth sound of the '80s) to acknowledged genre classics like Liquid Liquid's punk-funk milestone "Cavern" (the birthplace of the famous bass line from Flash's later hit "White Lines") and Indeep's "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." Flash keeps the cutting and scratching to a minimum, preferring to let the songs groove on their own. This isn't a full-length display of bravura technique like the genre-defining masterpiece "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel," but as a suite of old-school dance-floor jams, it's pretty hard to beat.
Recorded at Reddlite Studios, Staten Island, New York.
Compilation producer: Grandmaster Flash.
Audio Mixer: Grandmaster Flash.
Recording information: Reddlite Studios, Stanten Island (The House Of Sin).
Photographer: Mo Daoud.
| | Singles Going Steady CD (1979) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered
Breakthrough music CDs
$10.49 SINGLES GOING STEADY is a collection of the Buzzcocks' singles, including both A and B-sides.
The Buzzcocks emerged from Manchester's thriving punk enclave with a succession of startling pop singles. Tight melodies and highly memorable hooklines were enveloped in a breathless group sound full of purpose and drive which contrasted with singer Pete Shelly's dispassionate, almost throwaway, delivery. These eight singles, both a-sides and flips, covered a variety of subject matter, from masturbation ('Orgasm Addict') to 1981 nuspeak ('Everybody's Happy Nowadays'), without recourse to obfuscation. Such seminal recordings have ensured the Buzzcocks' place in a lineage just a bit below the Kinks and the Smiths as one of the best purveyors of the 45 rpm.
If Never Mind the Bollocks and London Calling are held up as punk masterpieces, then there's no question that Singles Going Steady belongs alongside them. In fact, the slew of astonishing seven-inches collected on Steady and their influence on future musicians - punk or otherwise -- sometimes even betters more famous efforts. The title and artwork alone (the latter itself partially inspired by the Beatles' Let it Be) have been parodied or referred to by Halo of Flies and Don Caballero, which titled its own singles comp Singles Breaking Up. As for the music, anybody who ever combined full-blast rock, catchy melodies and romantic and social anxieties owes something to what the classic quartet did here. The deservedly well-known masterpiece "Ever Fallen in Love" appears along with Love Bites' "Just Lust," but the remaining tracks originally appeared only as individual A and B-sides, making this collection all the more essential. The earlier numbers showcase a band bursting with energy and wicked humor - the tongue-in-cheek "Orgasm Addict," details the adventures of a sex freak with a ridiculous fake orgasm vocal break to boot. However, the slightly more serious but no less frenetic singles are equally enthralling. "What Do I Get?" with its pained cry about lacking love, the deeply cynical "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" and Diggle's roaring "Harmony in My Head" are just three highlights on an album made of them. The final songs show the band incorporating their more adventuresome side into their singles, as with the slower, very Can-inspired "Why Can't I Touch It?," the semi-jokey stop-start thrash "Noise Annoys," and the Murphy's Law worries of "Something's Gone Wrong Again." [The UK release adds eight bonus tracks, four after the original A side ("You Say You Don't Love Me," "Are Everything," "Strange Thing," and "Running Free") and four after the original B side ("Raison d'Etre," "Why She's the Girl from the Chainstore," "Airwaves Dream," and "What Do You Know")] ~ Ned Raggett
Import digitally remastered reissue of the classic 1979 singles compilation features 24 tracks including 8 bonus tracks not available on the U.S. non-remastered version: 'You Say You Don't Love Me', 'Are Everything', 'Strange Thing', 'Running Free', 'Raison D'etre', 'Why She's A Girl From The Chainstore', 'Airwaves Dream' and 'What Do You Know'. | | Slight Departure Altapass CD (2006)
Breakthrough CD music
$17.69 From the band:There often occurs during the experience of any band that stays together any length of time, a special relationship with a certain venue where they play again and again. Something just clicks between the staff, the audience, and the band, and the relationship becomes some kind of ongoing process that acquires a life of its own and influences the musical direction of the band. We have enjoyed this partnership with The Historic Orchard at Altapass for several years. On any given weekend at The Orchard, you might hear an old country honky-tonk band, a hyper-speed bluegrass band, a gospel quartet, an Elvis impersonator, a Broadway show tunes revue, or us. Yeah, once again, there's Slight Departure, doing that music that no one can pigeonhole. Is it Old Time? Is it Bluegrass? Folk? C & W? Western Swing? It is every bit as broad as the background of the people who come to enjoy The Orchard. About all we can say is, no matter what it is, it is filtered through the traditional acoustic instruments indigenous to this part of the mountains. The collection of songs for this CD were developed and nurtured during our appearances at The Orchard over the past several years. We will not say "matured" like a fine wine, because, every time we play there, the song comes out different depending on what's going on in front of us. For instance, we never would have thought of putting Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue on a CD except for the folks at The Orchard who, to the surprise and delight of onlookers, came up and started doing "The Charleston". Alan was impressed by the historical bent of The Orchard and penned Big Tom Wilson about an early North Carolinian mountain man who discovered the drowned body of Elijah Mitchell on nearby Mount Mitchell, now named for the man who determined it to be the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Some friends contributed to A Waltz for Uncle John, Marshall Ballew's heartfelt remembrance of singer/songwriter Jerry Garcia. Sherrill Keever's June Bug Two Step was recorded in the studio right after he acquired his mountain lark (he calls it his “dulcilele”), and which we all agreed had to be included as part of this inspired process of reinventing traditional music. Alan picked up Down the River Uncle Joe from Don Pedi down in Glen Rose, Texas. The rest of the songs are pretty self-explanatory. They are favorite dance or listening tunes that received such a response at The Orchard, that they became part of our repertoire. So sit back and listen, or get up and dance. But come see us, or anybody else for that matter at an Altapass near you. You never know what's going to happen.About the band:Slight Departure is an acoustic quartet consisting of Alan Darveaux on dulcimer, Sherrill Keever on guitar and mountain lark, Jim Clark on bass, and Jeff Haslam on mandolin, dobro and resonator mandolins and Cumbus banjo mandolin. They are slightly departed from any particular category of music. Alan’s background is in folk and plays his dulcimer more like a guitar than in the traditional style. Keever grew up with the Beatles and Doc Watson and gives them the polish. Jeff comes from 60's folk with Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead influences and brings out the kid in everybody. Jim grew up with rock, blues and jazz influences and is the steadying influence. The four of them offer a blend of fine harmonies, a wide spectrum of songs and a whole lot of fun.

| | Leslie West Band New York State Of Mind CD (2007)
Breakthrough songs
$15.89 Leslie West was the axeman who led Mountain to glory in the late 1960s as America's power-trio answer to Cream, but he's also enjoyed an extensive solo career. NEW YORK STATE OF MIND, part of a series of formerly bootlegged live West recordings, hails from a 1994 show that finds West revisiting some former glories by delving into such riff-rocking Mountain classics as "Mississippi Queen" and "Nantucket Sleighride," as well as guitar-god showpieces like Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile," and even a rocked-up take on the Billy Joel-penned tune that gives this album its title.
New York State Of Mind was recorded live at The Lone Star in 1994 while Leslie was promoting his then new album of Dodgin The Dirt. The performance features two tracks from the album Whiskey Train and the Billy Joel cover New York State of Mind. Billy Joel of course was a friend of Leslies and grew up with him in Long Island where the two played in various competing bands. Other tracks included in this live set are Mississippi Queen, Never In My Life, Blood Of The Sun and Nantucket Sleighride.

| | Book Of Love Lullaby CD (1988) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Breakthrough CD music
$11.59 LULLABY, the 1987 release from the New York based Book Of Love, begins with a techno/dance jolt, and ends with the haunting strains of the nocturnal title track. In between it reveals the band's experimentation. Beginning with a remix of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells (Theme From the Exorcist)" which crescendos into an ecstatic dance fest, the album segues into the band's Number One dance chart-topping "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls," a song that was one of the first to address the AIDS crisis.
Also included is keyboard/vocalist's Ted Ottaviano's sunny, child-like "With a Little Love," sung in his sweet, Chet Baker-esque voice. "Witchcraft," with samples from the television show Bewitched, and featuring a roundup of witches and warlocks past and present, has a funky dance groove mixed with campy lyrics. A wonderful follow-up to the band's 1986 debut album, LULLABY still mines its electro-minimalist style to perfection.
Book of Love's Ted Ottaviano was credited with playing "tubular bells" on the band's self-titled debut album. On their second album, Book of Love opened the proceedings with their own danceable version of the 1973 Mike Oldfield instrumental hit as a way of launching into a somewhat harder-edged album. Producer Flood (of Depeche Mode fame) brought his ominous, beat-heavy approach to the group's already street-smart disco persona, with the result that tracks like "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls" had an urgency lacking on the more pop-oriented debut. This was not, however, the way to break Book of Love beyond the dance clubs, and Lullaby did little to advance their career. [The album was reissued in 2009 with five bonus tracks, mostly remixes.] ~ William Ruhlmann
Recorded at D & D Recording and Unique Recording, New York.
Engineers: MacDonald Quayle, Jeff Lord-Alge, Mike Rogers.
Liner Note Author: Michael Paoletta.
Book Of Love: Jade Lee (vocals, keyboards, percussion); Ted Ottaviano, Lauren Roselli (vocals, keyboards); Susan Ottaviano (vocals).
Additional personnel: Roger Parsons (bagpipes).
