German label SPV's retrospective of blues sides from record man William "Hossman" Allen's various labels features music from legends such as Johnny Copeland, Gatemouth Brown, and Scotty Moore, as well as relatively more obscure names such as Art Grayson, Tiny Watkins, and the Beat Boys. The focus here is certainly on the blues, but there are also doses of hep-cat R&B (the Beat Boys' "Flip End"), pop soul (Frank Howard's "Smokey Places"), ballads (Lucille Watkins's "Somewhere Out There"), and novelty songs (Hoss Allen himself's "He Went to the Top of the Mountain," a sermon-style gospel tribute to the Reverend Martin Luther King).

The definitive rock opera, TOMMY liberated the Who from a "singles band" stigma, marking them as a substantial artistic force. Composer Pete Townshend had flirted with the conceptual format on two previous releases, but here his vision is spread over two ambitious records that play to the Who's main strengths. Anthems such as the raucous "Pinball Wizard" and the surprisingly serene "I'm Free" emphasize the kinetic power of the band, while Townshend's cast of characters ...

| | Keb' Mo' CD (1994)
Rogana Story album
$7.19 The first solo release by contemporary blues-based artist Keb Mo' mixes a reverence for traditional country blues with more streamlined elements of commercial pop. Despite a convincing "down-home" approach of gravel-textured vocals and superior slide work and finger-picking skills, Keb Mo' avoids the pose of a hard line revivalist. Instead, he chooses to employ his fluency in the Delta tradition as a palette on which to blend a connoisseur's sampling of various musical genres. Country, funk, swing, and late 20th-Century folk balladry (Traci Chapman, James Taylor and Bob Dylan) all manage to make their way into the mix for a seamless blend of roots and radio friendliness.
Keyboards, bass and drums (in addition to Keb Mo's contributions on guitar, harmonica and banjo) flesh out breezy soul-inflected pop such as "She Just Wants To Dance" and ...

| | Charlie McMahon Didjeridu Travelling Songs CD Import
Rogana Story songs
$22.09 From one-handed didjeridoo fusionist Charlie McMahon comes the latest in a series of albums of scorching fusion/traditional/worldbeat/something else music. The key for McMahon doesn't so much appear to be connecting the old with the new as it is to simply make use of an old instrument in new arrangements and the like. He runs the range from dancehall to acid jazz here, with the didjeridoo making its way through, number by number. At times, McMahon uses the instrument in a relatively traditional manner (but perhaps overlaid by electric guitars), and at times he uses it in an amplified, pitch-shifted manner to fit with the rest of the largely electronic-slash-percussion ensemble. Aboriginal singer Bobby Bunuggurr provides some interesting interplay between old song formats and thick beats here and there to complement the stretching of cultures already set up. The album provides little in the way of something categorizable. It's not really worldbeat proper, though it has aspects of it. It's certainly not traditional Australian music, though it has some aspects of that as well. It's just barely fusion for that matter, as there is little being fused. If any single label can be given it, it has to be the blanket of electronica, which it spans quite well, incorporating older instruments, ...
| | Jupiter Avenue CD (2002)
Rogana Story album
$12.69 From the hot/cold tundra of Northern Michigan comes the new hard core/alternative psychedelic band named "Jupiter Avenue." The name Jupiter Avenue is a lot like their sound but they are five hard working young men. There are two brothers, Timothy Haynze Whitmore - drums and Andy Whitmore - guitar. These two brothers come from a very musically inclined family. They were the last two to join Jupiter Avenue that at the time was named Nail. Nail started as a three piece comprised of Chad Okuly - guitar, Kevin Santer -bass and Chris Maxwell - vocals. After practicing very hard in Chad's dad's basement of his local convenience store, they decided they had pulled their hair out enough. The trio decided to try and recruit the Whitmore brothers but at the time they were in another local band called "Smoked Fish" which had a pretty good following and a pretty good future until it all came to a halt. The band broke up because of creative differences. At that time, the Whitmore brothers were free to join Nail. So, as the Whitmore brothers came on board, the sound of Nail changed and so did the name.Street Smack 120(SS-120) was born- five guys kicking ...
