| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Allo Monde CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and sympathetic, but there are some surprising additions (Paraguayan harp, anyone?). Natacha Atlas weighs in ...

| | Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music: Vols. 1 & 2 CD (1987)
Allo Monde CD music
$13.59 Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations.
If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.
Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. Dewey Balfa, the band's de facto leader is possessed of a classic Cajun vocal style; it's frequently impossible to tell whether he's lamenting or rejoicing. The Brothers' ...
| | Sonic Tribe CD (2000)
Allo Monde music CDs
$13.89 This Australian collective's debut album has all the necessary ingredients for an aural stew destined to warm the center of any listener. Roaring didgeridoos, haunting flutes, guitar, percussion, synths, indigenous chants, sweet vocal harmonies, and deep synth pads combine for an overall effect both energizing and calming. Middle Eastern flutes and delayed guitar riffs awaken the spirit on the opening track, as if calling the listener to a desert journey. The journey resumes in "Siren of the Desert" and "Sahara Sunrise," where exotic flutes pirouette in hallucinatory patterns around entrancing female vocals and hand drums. Other highlights of this journey include the probing mystical purview of "Ancestral Voyage," with its churning didgeridoos paddling back through rivers of time as the inspired guitar work of founding member Scott Huckabay opens vistas overhead. Tracks like "Passage 4 Love" and "Lunar Eclipse" are more contemplative opuses, tailor-made for mindful meditation or candle-lit time spent with a loved one. Though this album's loose and inspired framework encompasses many moods, it would still make a perfect, seamless background for everything from yoga sessions to dinners with friends to dancing around a tribal fire.
