Das EFX -- part of EPMD's Def Squad crew, which also included K-Solo and Redman, among others -- made such a wide breakthrough in 1992 with their debut album that their hit "They Want EFX" was even referenced in the lily-white teen serial Beverly Hills 90210. That Dead Serious could have that sort of broad impact and still retain its credibility within the underground hip-hop community says something about its appeal, which was considerable. But the album wasn't just appealing; it was also enormously influential, ushering in an entirely unique rhyming flow that influenced any number of rappers, established and novice alike. What exactly the duo is rapping about is anyone's guess. One thing is for sure: their lyrics are about as far removed from hardcore realism as they could possibly be, and although there are certain elements of boasting, it is so cut up and contorted that it never sounds like there's even a hint of the humdrum here. None of the lyrical clichés that can occasionally bog down even the finest hip-hop artist are present. Members Dre and Skoob (tellingly, "books" spelled backward) instead engage in lightning-fast, tongue-twisted word association and stream-of-consciousness rants rich in pop cultural references and allusions. It was a completely original rhyming style in 1992 -- one of the reasons it had such an impact both in the insular world of hip-hop and on the wider public -- but it also had an invigorating looseness that lent itself to commercial radio. "They Want EFX" is clearly the creative highlight of the album; the other songs work the same basic template, and each one is nearly equal in execution and charm, particularly the jaunty "Mic Checka" and "Jussummen." ~ Stanton Swihart

While he touches upon the same socially conscious topics labelmate Mr. Lif does, C-Rayz Walz comes from a refreshingly more personal and humble angle. Family, home life, and the day-to-day struggle are topics that show up on Ravipops, an album title that represents Walz's status as father to the newborn Ravi and a new alias for the rapper. A corrupt and oppressive world has often been a topic for underground rap; seeing it through the less self-centered eyes of a father is what gives the album its allure and makes Walz seem all the more genuine. Don't think Walz has bought his Cosby sweater and clamped down. He boasts, sings the praises of weed, and cusses all over the album, and his distaste for the status quo is obvious. It's his appreciation of life's simple pleasures that makes him easy to relate to and an underdog worth rooting for. There's a new producer for practically every track, but the album flows well enough, keeping things more traditional than expected for a Definitive Jux release, and the freestyling ranges from biting to abstract. The ode to domestic responsibility, "Protect My Family," and the nostalgic look at one of rap's brilliant years, "'86," are highlights, with raps that are focused and inspired. Walz's developing skills may not turn every head right away, but he sounds like he's on the road to releasing underground rap's What's Going On. ~ David Jeffries

As a part of the Black Knights, the first west coast act signed to the RZA's label, Holocaust (the MC sometimes known as Warcloud) made a little name for himself among Wu-Tang fans after memorable appearances in the late 1990s on the compilation album THE SWARM VOLUME 1 and the RZA's first BOBBY DIGITAL album. Now teaming up with San Francisco-based production duo Blue Sky Black Death (made up of Kingston and Young God), Holocaust gets a 15-track platform on which to display his lyrical abilities. With his flow, an unrelenting juggernaut of grim, medieval imagery, Holocaust follows the lead of other Wu affiliates like Killah Priest and Shabazz the Disciple. His strange verses on tracks like "Smoking Room," "Wing To Wingfeather," and "Crash" paint sinister cinematic scenes of a Dark Age fantasy world that surely exists only in the minds of Dungeons & Dragons fans and Holocaust himself. In many ways, this album gives us nothing new but it does do well to recall the sound of Wu-Tang's golden age as Blue Sky Black Death's production mirrors the RZA's early 1990s formula of moody, seething synthesizers and well-placed, sped-up vocal snippets to chilling effect.

The CD is a maningful and intelligent record which is a breath of fresh air in today's stale era of so-called hip-hop. This limited edition set includes a bonus DVD. On Little Brother's third studio album GETBACK, 9th Wonder backs off the boards, producing just one cut and yielding production credits to Illmind, Khrysis, Mr. Porter, Nottz, Rashid Hadee, Zo!, and Hi-Tek. The end result is still an incredibly cohesive LP that relies on elevated lyricism and true-school reverence. Phonte and Big Pooh continue to hone their already-impressive mic skills, deconstructing narratives behind brand name materialism, myths of celebrity glamour, and flimsy arguments that blame hip-hop for society's ills. Lil Wayne, Carlitta Durand, Darien Brockington, Jozeemo, and Dion make guest appearances. GETBACK is another example of innovative hip-hop from one of the underground's most talented acts.
It should be an easy story to tell: vaunted rap group loses the producer who made them a quality act, then slowly sinks back into the underground, never to be heard from again. From Get Back, it's clear that Little Brother didn't mind the loss of 9th Wonder and decided to rewrite the script. Not only do Phonte and Pooh sound like nothing has changed, in point of fact they sound more energized and engaged than ever before. They've got more to say and more intriguing ways to say it, including touches like fronting a flashy production worthy of Bad Boy for the anti-materialist "Good Clothes," inviting Lil Wayne for "Breakin My Heart" (where he reliably blows your mind with line after line, like "I don't want a broken heart because I lose the pieces"), and floating an utterly hilarious exposé of late-night hook-ups
