Much to the delight of fans of the Lounge Lizards' singular, remarkable aesthetic, lead Lizard (and sometime film actor) John Lurie started his own label, the aptly named Strange And Beautiful Music. This dual soundtrack album (the first score, "African Swim," is for a film that no longer exists) is one of the label's first releases, and finds Lurie staying true to the inventive, exploratory nature of his past work, while moving away somewhat from the Lounge Lizards' avant-skronk, toward a quieter, more evocative sound.
AFRICAN SWIM moves rapidly across the stylistic map from laid-back grooves ("Al Al Al Al"), through fragmentary chamber music ("Teddy Bear's Nik Pop"), to cool jazz narratives ("Big Trouble"), with the plaintive "Al" theme, usually played on clarinet, acting as a recurring motif.
