(1 Customer Review)
After solidly establishing themselves on the contemporary heavy music scene, Avenged Sevenfold wasted little time with following up their 2005 break-through effort, CITY OF EVIL. The band took a bold step on their fourth and self-titled full-length, opting to produce it themselves--a risky task indeed for such a young band.
Right out of the gate, Singer M. Shadows leads A7X even further into melodic territory--but not without a little help. Lending her vocal support to the slow-grooving "Gunslinger" and the heavy country rocker "Dear God" and taking a solo turn on "(Unbound) The Wild Ride" is Nashville implant Shanna Crooks. A7X explore dramatic power metal in the epic "A Little Piece Of Heaven," while first single "Critical Acclaim" cuts close for what has become the group's signature sound. Nonetheless, it is on this self-titled set that the band sets its sights on the mainstream.
Coming off a Best New Artist Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, the members of Avenged Sevenfold returned to the studio, ambitious to create an exciting follow-up to City of Evil, and their self-titled release often focuses hard on pushing the songs into non-metal territory. Their signature blistering Yngwie Malmsteen guitar arpeggios and lightning fast double-kick drums are still evident, while AS show their unbridled enthusiasm to be as inventive as possible as they run through a staggering amount of production enhancements: four songs have string arrangements; violinists, pianists, and vocalists make guest appearances here and there; "A Little Piece of Heaven" is a strange Mr. Bungle-type number with sax, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet; and "Unbound (The Wild Ride)" throws in the most un-metal addition of all -- a children's choir. Some of these enhancements help take the songs to the next level, while others give the sensation of inappropriately mashed-up styles. Vocalist M. Shadows, who required surgery on his vocal cords after Waking the Fallen, shows that his training with Ron Anderson (vocal coach for Layne Staley, Axl Rose, and Chris Cornell) has been for the greater good. Rather than screaming or doing the metal growl, he sings in a few gritty voices, showing an obvious Mike Patton influence, and actually sounds pitch-perfect. His skills and the entire band's technical ferocity are flawless as ever, and although they get lost in a cluttered vision, their willingness to experiment is admirable. Avenged Sevenfold CD music
$19.59 Although many music fans were convinced that Def Leppard would become hard rock's next big band, few could have predicted the massive across-the-boards success that its third record, 1983's PYROMANIA, achieved. Many wondered why it was taking the group so long to release a follow-up to 1981's HIGH 'N' DRY, but the finished product was well worth the wait. Not only did it become one of the year's best-selling albums and made the band instant U.S. arena headliners, but it has remained a consistent seller ever since (by 1994, it had reached nine million units in the U.S. alone).
The songwriting and overall sound was more streamlined and succinct this time around--while there are guitar riffs galore, the songs have more of a pop feel. Founding guitarist Pete Willis left during the recording, replaced by Phil Collen, who fit in perfectly with the band. The album features such mega-hits as "Photograph," "Rock of ...
| | Fleshtones Do You Swing CD (2003)
Avenged Sevenfold music CDs
$13.69 Some folks like to say that history is cyclical, and it certainly supports this theory that just as a bunch of young bucks have (once again) come along to say that rock & roll is getting stale and needs a good dose of high attitude and fuzz-tone energy, the Fleshtones -- who've been saying the same thing since 1977 -- have re-emerged to remind the world how this whole "super rock" thing is supposed to be done. Maybe they don't dress quite as sharp as the Hives, or pose as well as the Strokes, or get worshiped by the British press quite like the White Stripes, but one spin of the Fleshtones' 2003 platter Do You Swing? proves that if you wanna get a rock & roll dance party started, Peter Zaremba and company are still your finest one-stop shopping place. And perhaps having some fresh competition (not to mention facing the fear of being outclassed by bands fronted by guys who weren't even alive when the Fleshtones played their first gigs) has been just what these folks have needed, because Do You Swing? is one of the strongest Fleshtones albums to date, boasting material every bit as potent as what they served up on Roman Gods and Hexbreaker, and sounding fresh, energetic, and gloriously alive. Rick Miller from Southern Culture on the Skids produced Do You Swing? at his ...

| | DB Leonard Island EP CD (2007)
Avenged Sevenfold music CDs
$9.59 Spring 2009Artist StatementDB LEONARD is a Singer and Parlor Guitar Player and a Teller of Tall Tales. His music has been classified as music noir, heavy in mood and imagery, with an emphasis on the spaces in between. It has been a near perfect match for the films it has accompanied as well as the listening rooms in which he has cast a web.He is a Scorpio, which is a water sign, which doesn’t help, nine planets out of twelve. The stars conclude that this can make his words sting. He has put this piece to good use, publishing his poetry in over a dozen literary journals. In Costa Rica, he was stung by a Scorpion. The next one he cut in two with a machete. His restless spirit started in Boston on heavy doses of Morphine and the Pixies. At Nineteen, he joined the first of several bands, soon ditching them all for a Trio of his own (Upright Bass, Broken Down Drums, 1973 Guild) that played all over the drunken town, the most memorable stint being a Tuesday Night Residency at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge (home to other local heroes, G. Love and Special Sauce and Morphine). In New York City he got the Tuesday night residency at the Living Room which broke Norah Jones. He still looks forward to Tuesdays. It was in New York City where he experienced his coming of age, first in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and then on 42nd Street. It started there on the platform of the L train and continued on through the stages, slowly and simply, a beautiful and often battered way of living, rising through the circular staircase of some of the city’s finest underground clubs. (The Living Room, Mercury Lounge, CBGB’s).September 11th prompted an investigation of alternatives. Literally and figuratively, DB began unplugging himself from the hive. He ditched his Vantage Electric for a 1932 Parlor Guitar handed over, as luck would have it, by one of his childhood heroes, Kurt Smith, (Tears for Fears) (for three hundred dollars). Quickly named Jezebel for her devilish fantasies, the instrument turned his moody pop songs onto their head, back in the direction of Robert Johnson. Like all bewitched guitars of her standing, Jezebel opened up some doors and burned some others. There was a solo tour in Amsterdam and an extended residency at the Colony Café in Woodstock. With the alternative tunings and the finger picking came vivid memories of Elliot Smith and Nick Drake. Glimpses of the blues tradition ala G. Love and Ben Harper. The angst of American Music Club’s Mark Eitzel and a certain longing of Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile. The narrative of Steve Earle and John Prine. If only Leonard Cohen would smoke a cigarette in the room, the majority of Db Leonard’s influences would be accounted for. For character studies, DB purchased a 1976 Pentax from a Flea Market in Hell’s Kitchen (twenty dollars) ...
