Chosen, Sequenced & Remastered Under The Bands Direct Supervision! The Release Kicks Off A Global Led Zeppelin Event With The Re-Release Of The Song Remains The Same DVD and Expanded/Remastered Soundtrack, Culminating With The Bands Performance At a Benefit Tribute Concert For The Late Atlantic Records Founder Ahmet Ertegun. Remastered with the band members oversight (produced by Jimmy Page, mixed by Kevin Shirley), Limited-edition deluxe version includes a DVD with the Premiere Version of the Led Zeppelin DVD, which was shown in theaters. Features new liner notes by David Fricke and cover designed by noted Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey.
Upon the release of MOTHERSHIP in 2007, almost three decades after their demise, Led Zeppelin arguably stood as the only other band in rock history to merit space with the Beatles in the greatest-of-all-time debate. While the latter practically invented the how-to guide for composing and recording modern pop, Zeppelin taught the machinery how to rock with a seismic bravado that decades latter still rattles foundations. In the post-Zeppelin era, rock became a synonym for a heaviness intended to both inspire awe and knock you flat with its weight. The first six Led Zeppelin records contain nary a less-than-stellar track and define perfection as a canon; yet adequately compiling bits and pieces of this remarkable run has always eluded the band. Though this collection is no substitute for the first six records, MOTHERSHIP succeeds as a greatest hits retrospective on two levels: one, as an introduction for neophytes who want all the band's signature songs, and two, as a sound upgrade for completists. (In fact, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones themselves are all given production credit on these blistering remasters.) While many extraordinary gems--"Going to California," "Battle Of Evermore," and "Your Time Is Gonna Come," among them--are left out, no reasonable Zep head can argue with the cuts that are included, from "Communication Breakdown" and "Black Dog" to "Dancing Days," "Kashmir," and "Achilles' Last Stand." In the end, MOTHERSHIP works as a stirring lecture in Zeppelin 101. (Note: The deluxe edition includes a live DVD of collected performances that stands with HOW THE WEST WAS WON as proof that the quartet could destroy a stage just as handily as they could a reel of tape.) Led Zeppelin's reunion for an Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert in November 2007 (pushed back a couple of weeks due to a finger injury Jimmy Page sustained during rehearsals) seemed like a spur of the moment thing -- but how spontaneous could it have been if it just happened to coincide with the release of an expanded The Song Remains the Same on both CD and DVD, the debut of their catalog as digital downloads, and the new two-disc compilation Mothership as a sampler of the whole shebang? Considering this full-scale, multi-prong assault -- which also included a new album by Robert Plant, after all -- it was probably not all that spontaneous. Such a precise attack suits this most mythic of classic rock groups, who always benefited from an enormous sense of scale. Weighing in at two discs and 24 tracks, Mothership has a sense of scale that the previous round of compilations -- the two-part Early Days & Latter Days, delivered in 1999 and 2000 respectively -- lacked, not just because it pushes these two phases together but because it is heavy on the heavy epics, emphasizing Zeppelin's sheer sonic ballast over either their lighter or more idiosyncratic moments. This effects the second disc more than the first, as the band started out heavy and expanded outward, and while it would have been nice if "Fool in the Rain" represented In Through the Out Door instead of "In the Evening," this is a minor quibble as Mothership hits the obvious high points without seeming perfunctory. And that, along with Page's new remastering, is the real selling point behind Mothership: as a compilation it is both gripping liUncut (p.112) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[MOTHERSHIP] gives us an insight into how devastating this arcane, courageous, frontierless, much-loved, much-feared music from so many worlds ago can still sound." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.46) - "[T]his covers all the rock bases....It's a monument to their power and crunch, riff follows solo follows hammering drums with visceral motion." Q (Magazine) (p.129) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[E]verything here does the job. For all the cold ambitions, brutal arrogance and sheer power on display, there's also an exuberance and malevolent charm." Mojo (Publisher) (p.121) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]estament to the fact that Zep's music remains bold, majestic and utterly untouchable, regardless of format." redundant... All right then: I know many of you are already sharpening your knives to go for my jugular after seeing my rating, demanding blood for the act of heresy of "trashing" the greatest band in the history of the universe. So once again, I'm compelled to post a disclaimer about my rating and my review, just so I can be at peace with MYSELF and to be PERFECTLY clear about things (and yet, I KNOW there are STILL gonna be people who will send me the usual death threats...oh well). I'll try to do this as short, quick and painless as I can (I'm sure you all have better things to do than to read a lot of pseudo-intellectual babble...)...Like removing a band aid! So here goes the disclaimer: I'm NOT a Zeppelin hater! I am NOT trashing the band! I am NOT trashing their music! Zeppelin rules! The band is awesome! The music is awesome! THIS compilation, however, is not. Yeah, I know all about their upcoming December one-off reunion gig, but even THAT fact does NOT justify this release. As other reviewers have accurately pointed out (and I'm sure many others will continue to do so...), "Mothership" has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING more and/or new to offer for Zep fans. Actually, it offers less: less songs than "Remasters" and/or "Earlier Days/Latter Days". So what is the point of this, really? The DVD? Sorry, not worth the price of admission, especially if I CAN get it elsewhere separately. The remastering? Most people can't even tell the difference...die hards sure can, but the average listener can't...sure, if you're one of the 2 or 3 people IN THE GALAXY that don't have any Zep material and you're looking to correct that, by all means, get this compilation right now, but if not... Insult me and threaten me all you want, but ask yourselves this one, simple question: which true Zep fan DOESN'T already have all these songs? I rest my case. Peace to you all...

Love It The Live footage on the DVD is worth the price alone, but you get two CDs of great sounding Zepplin as well. Submitted by cutter (Mo. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nothing New Here But Awesome Collection Nonetheless. Well, there's really nothing new in this 'new' release from the Gods of Rock but nontheless it's another great addition to my Led Zeppelin collection. "The Ocean" should've been included though. If your're a Zeppelin nut like me, you shouldn't miss Mothership. The presentation and design of the packaging is great but I found it's kind of hard to take the Disc's out of the sleeves. Oh well...nothing's perfect. The DVD concert footage was taken from the Led Zeppelin 2-DVD set. Submitted by Ron (Kent, WA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Freshened up sonics, my follow up Review As of my first review I really didnt have much time to spend with Mothership. After being able to A/B my Cube-(Complete Studio Recordings Remasters) with the Mothership tracks, I am able to now appreciate the nice Remaster job on this set. Yes, Its redundant, yes we all already own all these songs some of us 2 or 3 times over. I am an audiophile, and a completist collector. I have (2)Stereo/Surround Audio Systems that took me years to build ,and small nuances and differneces in recordings I love are the reason I spent so much $$$.(Almost marriage ending)My standalone cd player most likely cost more than most peoples entire stereo.
This set really cleans up alot of the somewhat muddy LZ recordings Ive been turning my treble up on over the years. "No Quarter" for example always was a favorite, even as a kid I would turn it up and turn off the lights and sit in front of the speakers.
On Mothership, this track is represented the best Ive heard on cd.The great vocal effects, Jimmys guitar,Bonzos drums and Jonseys organ & bass take on a fresh life. All of the tracks sound great. As for the bonus DVD I own the whole thing anyway. But I suppose Its great for someone that does not and who may go out and buy it after watching the bonus included here.
Now I wish JP would remaster the whole catalog again. In 5.1 Surround DTS would be great. But for now I have my 2003/2005 Japan Reissues(which sound alot like Mothership) and Mothership to get my Zep fix. Submitted by mako9437 (NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | David Gilmour About Face CD (1984) Remastered
Mothership
$7.59 Personnel: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Barbara Snow, Roddy Lorimer, Tim Sanders, Simon Clark (horns); Steve Winwood (piano, organ); Ian Kewley (piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Bob Ezrin (keyboards); Jon Lord, Anne Dudley (synthesizer); Pino Palladino (bass guitar); Jeff Porcaro (drums, percussion); Louis Jardin, Ray Cooper (percussion); Vicki Brown, Roy Harper, Sam Brown, Mickey Feat (background vocals). David Gilmour released his second solo venture in 1984, following the apparent dissolution of Pink Floyd. He had released a record on his own in 1978, but About Face is much more accessible. Gilmour has a stellar band backing him, including Jeff Porcaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), and Anne Dudley (synthesizer). The songs on About Face show a pop sensibility that Pink Floyd rarely was concerned with achieving. Although the album didn't attract the attention of a Floyd release, several cuts did manage to get airplay. "Until We Sleep" is rife with shimmering synthesizers ...

| | Robert Plant Raising Sand CD (2007)
Mothership
$13.65 Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss collaboration, RAISING SAND, is a far cry from Led Zeppelin's stadium rock, it offers up some hauntingly moody textures that should appeal to "Battle of Evermore" admirers. Consisting mostly of sagely chosen cover tunes, the album finds Plant and Krauss bringing their warm-but-eerie harmonies to everything from Townes Van Zandt's nihilistic folk poetry ("Nothin'") to the crumbled beauty of latter-day Tom Waits ("Trampled Rose"). Determined not to rest on their laurels or cater to expectations, the 59-year-old icon and his junior partner craft a subtle and intriguing sound built on their shared love of folk forms and gift for interpretation, bringing to light esoteric gems by late Byrds visionary Gene Clark and the Everly Brothers ...
| | Led Zeppelin Song Remains The Same CDs (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Mothership
$16.35 Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (bass, piano); John Bonham (drums). Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Cameron Crowe. Audio Mixer: Kevin Shirley. Liner Note Author: Cameron Crowe. Recording information: Madison Square Garden, NY (1973). Led Zeppelin's 1976 film The Song Remains the Same mixes their 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden with fantasy scenes and footage of the group members backstage and at home. Intense, extended performances of classics like "Dazed and Confused," "No Quarter," and "Whole Lotta Love" don't always blend well with the hallucinatory imagery, but die-hard Zep fans will appreciate the set's uniquely '70s feel. The DVD doesn't add as many extra features as fans might like, providing only a theatrical trailer and enhanced viewing for 16 x 9 televisions, but The Song Remains the Same remains a distinctive part of Led Zeppelin's history. ~ Heather Phares Commonly dismissed as a disappointment upon its initial ...
