Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).

A much admired and loved man, of all the many brilliant orchestration projects this was his finest in his own right. He teases us with the opening of 'La Nevada' until the gorgeous repeated four-bar riff finally bursts on our ears with orgasmic delight. There are wonderful brass solos from John Coles, Tony Studd and Budd Johnson and a bass showcase for Ron Carter. As the opening track peters out after 15 minutes the listener enjoys the smug realization that there are a further four outstanding pieces to come.

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on November 18 & 30 and December 10 & 15, 1960. Includes liner notes by Tom Stewart and Michael Cuscuna.

Gil Evans Orchestra: Gil Evans (arranger, conductor, piano); Budd Johnson (soprano & tenor saxophones); Eddie Caine, Ray Beckenstein (alto saxophone, flute, piccolo); Johnny Coles, Phil Sunkel (trumpet); Keg Johnson, Jimmy Knepper (trombone); Tony Studd (bass trombone); Bill Barber (tuba); Bob Tricarico (flute, piccolo, bassoon); Ray Crawford (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Charlie Persip, Elvin Jones (drums, percussion).

Producer: Creed Taylor.

Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.Q (7/96, p.137) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...the arranger at the peak of his powers....Never is a surplus riff utilised in the name of authority. Everywhere there's room for soloists to move..."

A timeless album. First bought this when it was originally issued and now years later it hasn't diminished in it's excellence. If you want to hear what music is all about this one should not be missed. Where did Jazz go??

Tina Brooks True Blue CD  (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered

Out Of The Cool album
CD $8.45  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Although a four-LP Mosaic box set purportedly includes every recording led by the obscure but talented tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, this 1994 CD has previously unreleased alternate takes of "True Blue" and "Good Old Soul" that Mosaic overlooked. Brooks is teamed with the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (on one of his earliest sessions), pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Taylor for a set dominated by Brooks' originals. None of the themes may be all that memorable ("Nothing Ever Changes My Love for You" comes the closest), but the hard bop solos are consistently excellent. ~ Scott Yanow Although a four-LP Complete Blue Note Recordings ...

Wayne Shorter Night Dreamer CD  (1964) Bonus Track; Remastered

Out Of The Cool CD music
CD $8.85  Audio Samples
Shorter's Blue Note debut, NIGHT DREAMER, is a stunning statement from one of the premiere saxophonists and composers in the history of jazz. In 1964, after a long period as musical director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and newly joining Miles Davis' quintet, Shorter was primed to enter the field as a major solo artist. His guests include Lee Morgan (trumpet), renewing the outstanding frontline the two formed in Blakey's band, and McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) from Coltrane's legendary quartet. The musical vision here, however, is Shorter's alone. Shorter's distinctive compositional style begins to take shape with the opening title track, a bouncing waltz with a dusky, modal flavor and a subtle ...

Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD  (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak

Out Of The Cool music CDs
CD $19.79  5 stars
The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. ...

Oliver Nelson Blues And The Abstract Truth CD  (1961) Reissue; Remastered

Out Of The Cool album
CD $9.35
The late Oliver Nelson had such a successful career as a composer of film and TV music ("Theme From the Six Million Dollar Man") and arranger that it often overshadowed his abilities as a jazz musician. In 1961, Nelson assembled a fantastic small ensemble, including Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, and Freddie Hubbard, for a session of six original compositions. Nelson was also an excellent, bluesy-toned saxophonist (heard here on tenor and alto) and his tunes cover a variety of moods, from the elegiac "Stolen Moments" to the wryly humorous, ...

Andrew Hill's previous 1964 outing on Blue Note, the trio-only SMOKE STACK, had drummer Roy Haynes sounding so much like Elvin Jones that Hill brought in the real thing for next quartet session, JUDGEMENT! True to form, the always fiery Jones gets things off to an explosive start on "Siete Ocho," with Hill and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson keeping up as best they can. The warmly inventive Hutcherson ...

Nice Girl, the new album from singer Carmel McCreagh, is generating significant interest amongst the Irish music media. "A late night record for all hours of the day." (Tony Clayton-Lea, music writer, The Irish Times)“A canny collection of languid scene-stealers that ably showcase her chameleon vocals… McCreagh slithers to just the right side of femme fatale…” (Siobhán Long, The Ticket (Irish Times))"A debut album [from] a consummate singer in the classic style, backed by a first-rate band… Lovers who wish to cling to each other and spin slowly across the kitchen floor will love it." (Cormac Larkin, The Sunday Tribune)“Carmel McCreagh, think torch singer with a bit of slow dancing. Or, if you want to pin her down, think jazz-blues crossover… But it's clear that she has developed a style that is her own. Many of the songs she sings are old favourites — I'll Be Seeing You, Good Morning Heartache, Someone to Watch Over Me — but the treatment is her own. You don't think, ah, Nina Simone or Billie Holiday. You think Carmel McCreagh…” ...
