| | Quincy Jones Quintessence CD Quincy Jones Discography of CDs
Before his breakthrough into the pop mainstream (and success as a composer of film soundtracks), Quincy Jones had a reputation as an ace jazz composer and arranger. THE QUINTESSENCE, recorded in 1961, is one of Jones's finest undiluted jazz outings. The album is a tasty mixture of Jones originals and standards by Thelonious Monk and Benny Golson. Jones's dapper, economical, and swinging arrangements feature superb soloists, including Phil Woods (merely one of the finest alto saxophonists in jazz history), Clark Terry, and Freddie Hubbard.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Quintessence album
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.

| | Killing Floor CD (1995) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Quintessence CD music
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in a heavy cardboard gatefold sleeve, and ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Quintessence music CDs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been ...

| | Definitive Jimmy Smith CD (2002)
Quintessence songs
$8.85 Recorded between March 1956 & September 1966. Includes liner notes by Donald Elfman.
This sampler draws from organist Jimmy Smith's Blue Note and Verve recordings, picking out seven highlights from the 1956-1966 period. Included are such gems from Smith's Blue Note years as the fiery up-tempo blues "The Champ" that helped launch his career," the 20-minute all-star jam "The Sermon" (with trumpeter Lee Morgan, altoist Lou Donaldson, tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and drummer Art Blakey) and "Midnight Special" with tenorman Stanley Turrentine. The four Verve selections team the organist with big bands arranged by either Oliver Nelson or Lalo Schifrin, and, although spirited, are generally of lesser interest. An exception is "Night Train," which has Smith sharing the spotlight with guitarist Wes Montgomery. Overall, this CD does give listeners an idea of what Jimmy Smith's first decade on record sounded like. ~ Scott Yanow
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
This is part of Blue Note Records "The Defenitive" series.

Quintessence music CDs
$15.89 The vibrant smooth-jazz release from Diamond Rio's Dan Truman and award-winning composer Ron Saltmarsh-------------Instrumental music has the distinct advantage of encompassing the various influences of time and place and emotion without fear of being pigeonholed into a specific genre or type. Instrumentals, especially if they lean toward the jazz spectrum--and it is a spectrum-- express cultural influences, spiritual ideologies and mere human moods unconstrained by preconceived notions of right or wrong or true or false. It can be what it wants to be. What it is. Such as it is with THIS WAY THAT. The brainchild of composer/producers Ron Saltmarsh and Dan Truman, two eclectic musicians with diverse taste and experience-but with a lot of common ground--THIS WAY THAT is the result of years of travel and musical meandering, and of exploration of all forms of music.Dan and Ron met in college while performing in the world renowned 'Young Ambassadors.' That world-touring group's multi-genre repertoire gave the two a background in pop, jazz, Sousa marches, contemporary orchestral music and country. It was there that Truman, producer and composer, discovered the similarities in jazz and country, ...
