| | Sonny Rollins On Impulse! CD Sonny Rollins Discography of CDs
Sonny Rollins made some excellent recordings for Impulse! in the mid-1960s, a time when his unassailable skills and acrobatic approach made him a leading saxophonist, and one of the few to rival John Coltrane. ON IMPULSE! has only five tracks, but each tells the complex, glorious story of Rollins's talent, especially in the stretched-out solos where his knack for inventively, endlessly de- and re-constructing melodies is evident. "On Green Dolphin Street," "Everything Happens to Me," and "Three Little Words" are among the standouts on this collection. The 2007 remaster boasts crisp and beautiful sound.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson.
Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on July 8, 1965.
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Ray Bryant (piano); Walter Booker (bass); Mickey Roker (drums).
JazzTimes (9/97, p.80) - "...Here [Rollins'] work has tremendous buoyancy and great continuity....Ray Bryant, Walter Booker and Mickey Roker provide him with with vigorous, intelligent accompaniment. Bryant's graceful complex solos deserve considerable praise and attention..." Sonny Rollins On Impulse! Songs On Impulse! Review

On Impulse! album
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson pieces, the sweetly lilting "'Til Then" and the innocent, childlike theme of "My Joy," which is reminiscent of "Little B's Poem" (save for its multi-sectioned structure). Meanwhile, Chambers' experiments with counterpoint ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
On Impulse! CD music
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's ...

| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
On Impulse! CD music
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her adventures, bringing an important change of pace to that popular band's hits. The jacket looks like a dusty old family album-style ...
