| | Debra Wendell Cross An American Mosaic CD (2000)
Bach: Dialogue Cantatas
$15.19 For over 15 years, the flute and harp duo of Debra Wendells Cross and Barbara Chapman have delighted audiences with their signature sound of lyrical beauty. Their repertoire ranges from standard repertoire, the best of contemporary chamber music and fresh arrangements of old favorites. Both long-time members of the Virginia Symphony, the Cross and Chapman duo are featured annually on the Chamber Music Series of the Virginia Arts Festival and are broadcast nationally on NPR's "Performance Today". As founding members of the Virginia Chamber Players, they have commissioned and premiered new music and performed with guest artists Andre Michel Schub, Paul Neubauer, and the Miami String Quartet. They have recorded for New Albion records, NPR Classics and Koch. Their premier CD, "An American Mosaic" features beautiful and rarely heard 20th century flute and harp duos. This recording presents the diversity of influences in American music in the 20th century. The music gains flavor from American Indian themes, folk songs, Far Eastern themes and South American themes, while remaining true to the inherent beauty of the flute and the harp. Barbara Chapman says of the project... "We had a great time researching and preparing this CD. Much of the music is unpublished and it was our goal to find not only lost music from the 20th century flute and harp repertoire, but serene and lyric music as well." The recording features "lost" music of the 1920's and 30's from the composers Lamar Stringfield, John Powell, Quinto Magnini and Timothy Mather Spelman and lyric, rarely heard music by Alan Hohvaness and Mario Broeders. Living composers are represented as well with the beautiful compositions of Bruce Campbell, Ken Kreuzer, Kenya Tillery and Andrea Stern. Composer, Andrea Stern says of the recording "This is a beautiful disc that can be listened to seriously, with attention, as well as played for background at a dinner party!"
Includes work(s) by Alan Hovhaness.
