While engineering and producing Straight from the Delta, a CD of field recordings performed by Mississippi Delta blues musicians, he became enamored with folk and roots music. Greg Shumake is a native of California. Raised in Oakland, he began in music early on in life and started playing piano at age 15. One major turning point for him happened in 1980 while attending Castlemont High School there in Oakland. Performing in concerts with the school Jazz Band, Concert Band, and choir "The Castleers," Greg gained exposure to the "power of the stage". But it was in 1984 in Riverside CA where Greg surrendered to the "Power of the Spirit of God."Always aspiring to be as excellent as possible in his music, Greg began holding solo concerts in churches located in Southern California. It was his desire to be known as a recording artist and he felt he had stepped into his role fully. But God had other plans.In 1989, he noticed that the music coming through him was changing to worship more and more. And in 1991, he launched headlong into the worship and praise format of music. He still preached, played, and sang, but the focus was more on the presence of God than the on his own talent.In September of that year, he and his family relocated to Colorado Springs with his employer at the time. While there, Greg continued to pursue the music and began to travel beyond the local Colorado boundaries to minister. God would open doors and Greg would walk through. It’s funny where life takes you. When Michael was in his early 20’s he was offered a spot as a pianist for the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. As a self-taught pianist who had just learned piano a few years earlier, this was a tremendous honor and opportunity. To this day he doesn’t remember why he turned it down. A born musician, he learned to play the accordion as a child then at 15 taught himself to play piano. A few years later he learned violin, guitar, keyboards and more. But somehow, with life’s twists and turns he ended up pursuing business interests that led him away from music. Soon the demands of his leadership role in his mountain community outside Denver, Colorado came to haunt him in the form of a chronic and life threatening heart condition. He was quick to re-evaluate what was most important and find the quiet, internally, to overcome. “In Search of Peace” was born from his own quest to find balance -- a life without stress, days full of appreciation, gratitude and love…to live in the moment. This CD was straight from his heart, an expression of who he is, and what he stands for.A couple of little known facts about a few of the songs:• “In Search of Peace” was written and recorded in one sitting with no modifications.
