This CD sometimes sounds like a hard bop jam session. Altoist Donald Harrison, who is joined by trumpeter Marlon Jordan (19 at the time), pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen, starts off the live session with "So What" and the "Freddie Freeloader"-like blues "Nut" (which alternates between two different keys). However, the date takes a welcome turn to the left during a 17-minute version of "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," which features an explorative Harrison solo, an explosive yet thoughtful improvisation from Jordan, and intense work by the rhythm section. After the leader's showcase on a rather sober interpretation of "In a Sentimental Mood," the quintet does a close impression of the Jazz Messengers on "For Art's Sake" (during which Chestnut imitates Bobby Timmons) before stretching out on "Oleo." This somewhat derivative music may not be essential, but the developing individuality of the young player does pop through here and there, and the solos are well played. ~ Scott Yanow
Donald Harrison was, along with Terence Blanchard, an integral part of one of the classic editions of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. This is the first of Donald Harrison's outings in his association with the Candid label and finds him paying tribute to t

| | John Coltrane First Meditations CD (1965)
For Art's Sake CD music
$10.65 A studio precursor to the collective improvisations of MEDITATIONS, this suite, recorded a month before LIVE IN SEATTLE, represents the final shining examples of the interplay, sensitivity and excitement of the John Coltrane Quartet. On MEDITATIONS Trane would add drummer Rashied Ali and tenor saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders to the mix, creating a sonic vortex that represented powerful new directions. Soon after, both Tyner and Jones felt it was time to move on.
Unlike the cosmic explorations of SUN SHIP, FIRST MEDITATIONS displays the serene side of Coltrane's spiritual quest--the reflection and outreach of A LOVE SUPREME. The sweet trills of "Love" present Trane's tenor in an angelic light, as Garrison and Jones' shifting drone leads to a chanting Tyner epic. Likewise, "Compassion" proceeds from the gentle three against ...

| | Isaac Hayes Movement CD (1970)
For Art's Sake songs
$9.59 ISSAC HAYES MOVEMENT is aptly named. It was here that Hayes reached his pinnacle as an arranger and producer, generating lengthy pieces that ebbed and crested into "movements" that were worlds removed from the taut, three-minute pop songs he helped write and craft for Stax/Volt studios in the 1960s. Ironically, none of the material on MOVEMENT is penned by Hayes. Instead, he takes on ...

Again, the album features four songs that span far beyond traditional radio-friendly ...
