Released in late 2007, Dave Gahan's second solo album, HOURGLASS, sounds like a companion piece to 2005's PLAYING THE ANGEL by Depeche Mode, the British vocalist's longtime band. This is no coincidence, since ANGEL marked the first time that Gahan was allowed to write his own DM songs, with the assistance of multi-instrumentalist Andrew Philpott and drummer Christian Eigner, who collaborate with the singer again on all the tracks on HOURGLASS.
Furthering ANGEL's dark, brooding mood, these songs deftly mix synth-pop and alt-rock with industrial textures, as evinced on the cavernous "Kingdom," which wonderfully utilizes Gahan's deep, resonant voice. Also moving into minimalist/ambient territory on the shimmering, David Sylvian-like "Miracles," HOURGLASS could easily be mistaken for a restless, more experimental DM outing, a concept that Gahan's fans will undoubtedly appreciate.
Gahan makes his dynamic return on his second album in this CD/DVD set. Produced by Dave with Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott, the CD also reflects his growth as a songwriter. The DVD features 4 live studio session tracks, an EPK, and a few other bits including a music video and some b-roll.Rolling Stone (p.83) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "HOURGLASS goes all the way electro, filling the mix with bloopy-bleepy synth blips." Uncut (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "HOURGLASS is more steeped in electronics, with Gahan continuing his cathartic process of confession..." Hourglass album
$5.55 CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last studio recording with Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer before the return of original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.
Despite a 1996 press conference on the U.S.S. Intrepid that announced Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer were on a "paid temporary vacation," the two were dismissed months later after a reunion tour of the original make-up clad members proved wildly successful. As the sub-heading states, CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last recorded efforts of Kulick and Singer with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Drawing on music trends started as far back as the lean times of the '80s, CARNIVAL finds Kiss putting together a sound that draws from the dirge of Alice In Chains and the crunch of old-school Metallica.
Much more somber than prior Kiss albums, nihilism runs rampant on songs such as "Hate" and "I Walk Alone." The mid-paced tempos of "Childhood's End" and "I Will Be There" inject some variety into a mix that includes Middle Eastern guitar phrasing in "Seduction Of The Innocent." In addition to Kulick flexing his instrumental muscles, two songs he co-wrote, "In The Mirror" and "I Walk Alone," feature lead vocals ...

| | Horrors Strange House CD (2007) Enhanced CD
Hourglass music CDs
$9.99 On their singles and EPs, the Horrors proved they'd done their post-punk and freakbeat homework. With their debut album, Strange House, they push their sound forward, distill it to its rawest essence, and give it a few funhouse mirror twists and turns for good measure. Almost half of the songs on the album already appeared on previous Horrors releases, but the ever-so-slightly cleaner production here gives more definition to their black-on-black sound. The band kicks off Strange House by revisiting their cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's "Jack the Ripper," which begins at a zombie-slow pace, then suddenly speeds up halfway through, transforming into a hurtling roller coaster of a song that makes a great introduction to Strange House's mix of campy humor, energy, and menace. With its dive-bombing noise barely held ...

| | Thrall Lifer CD (2003)
Hourglass music CDs
$9.05 In the vortex of a Bushcroft future, there's simply not enough crude, dark post-punk apocalyptic noise in the world. Re-enter Thrall, back on Alternative Tentacles for their third full-length cauldron of bedlam from the other side of the Masonic Lodge door. 2003.
The third album by Detroit's Thrall sounds like some kind of cross between the Jesus Lizard (the abrasive, Big Black-derived guitar sound), any European death metal band (singer Mike Hard's verge-of-ridiculous deep voice, which in his case sounds more like a near-dead ...

| | Double Down Still Motion CD (2007)
Hourglass music CDs
$9.35 Imagine if John Denver plugged in a Les Paul! Double Down is a professional and energetic rock band with songs that reflect the spirit of the Mile High city. Influenced by Guns n' Roses, John Denver, Foo Fighters, Van Halen, and .38 Special, their music can be labeled as "Rock with a mild hint of Country and Blues". 'Double Down has a great sound. I was really surprised to hear a band like this in Denver's local scene. They combine some very tight musicians with a dynamite vocalist and grab your ear from across the room. The riffs are catchy, the music is fun and the voice makes it all sing. ' -Cole, A&R Dept. , CAM RecordsProduced by Desert Air Recording, Double Down's first independent release 'Still Motion' showcases Rock, Blues, country, and penmanship of the early singer/songwriter days. 'Catchy hooks, raw and unrefined are best. ' says Jeff Browning, the front man for the group. Double Down is currently working on new material for a second professionally released CD and playing in some of Denver's best venues for original music, including Herman's Hideaway and The Cricket On The Hill. Their music has also been played on KGNU 88. 5 FM, numerous pod casts, and various other independent radio stations nationwide. Co-founders Jeff Browning and Paul Jarrett formed the group in the summer of 2005 with the intent of creating something that Denver rock and country fans can really connect with and appreciate. Their songs are familiar and accessible, touching on subjects from the beginnings of American car culture in the days of prohibition, to personal relationships and the day to day struggles of making a living. Performing live, Double Down pulls off a crowd pleasing rock cover of John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High". Jeff serves it up with a heavy rock guitar, and dominant lead vocals textured with a country edge. The show cools down with a Hendrix-like blues tune, "Fallen". A tight pop influenced song, "Day Gets Away" changes the mood a bit, and a crowd favorite,' Whiskey Driver" moves full throttle into country rock territory. Double Down is a professional band with over 60 years of combined musical experience, with members having performed for countless audiences, including active duty military stationed overseas, cruise ships, and local community events. Contactdoubledownrocks booking: jeff@doubledownrocks (303)307-4398__The country-rock or "alternative country" genre is fast becoming a crowded one, and because of this, it is becoming harder and harder for a band rooted in these styles to create something that is still new, unique, and exiting. However, combining hard rock, country and blues, Denver Colorado's Double Down are one such band that seem to be determined to stand out from the pack with their latest EP Still Motion. It would be hard to argue that the six songs offered are packed full of energy, passion and sincerity, with every track being played as if it may be their last. You can almost smell the dirt, sweat, and whiskey with each passing ...
