Mozaiq album
$13.85 Mention the Scandinavian death metal/black metal scene to someone who doesn't follow it closely, and he/she is likely to think of a bunch of amelodic, occult-obsessed bands that engage in bombast for the sake of bombast and brutality for the sake of brutality. That's the stereotypical view of Nordic death metal/black metal, and many of the Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish bands in that scene happily live up to it. Some Scandinavian death metallers, in fact, are honest enough to admit that their scene can be something of an inside joke (much like techno/rave music). But the '90s and 2000s have also seen a wave of Nordic death metal bands that are highly melodic, and Finland's Insomnium is part of that trend. The most extreme thing about Since the Day It All Came Down is the vocal style; lead singer/bassist Niilo Sevänen sings in a deep, guttural, demonic-sounding growl that exemplifies the stereotypical image of death metal singing. But other than that, this 2004 release isn't so extreme. Musically, Insomnium owes a ...

$12.49 When the year 2007 rolled around, Europe continued to seriously dominate the death metal/black metal field (something it had been doing since the '90s) as well as goth metal, progressive metal, and the power metal revival movement. But one area where the United States remained quite dominant was the metalcore/hardcore realm; the vast majority of metalcore or screamo bands that emerged in the early to mid-2000s were American bands. There are exceptions to that rule, certainly -- and one of them is Japan's Lost Eden, who offer by-the-book screamo on Cycle Repeats. Screamo (which shouldn't be confused with either ...

$9.19 The heavy music world has had plenty of contrast-minded bands in the '90s and 21st century -- bands that love to contrast clean vocals with extreme vocals or lush melodies with brutal sensory assault. Some of those contrast-minded bands are in melodic death metal or symphonic black metal (both of which have been dominated by Europe), while others have embraced the screamo/melodic hardcore/post-hardcore style (which has been dominated by the United States). Finland's Ghost Brigade favor a very contrast-minded approach on their debut album, Guided by Fire, which has been ...
