Here we go again -- and we've been going for a decade. Who would have ever considered the day that the extreme nature of Nordic black metal, both musically and lyrically, would become a yawn? Enthroned are warriors of black metal, they have endured so many membership changes (including one suicide) that they're near impossible to count. What's more amazing is that with the exception of one album, the critically lambasted Armoured Bestial Hell (their "experimental" album), every single Enthroned album sounds the same. Fans of dyed-in-the-hoof black metal will no doubt be delighted that this one band isn't selling out to the temptation of progressing musically. It's all here, the Devil, and Satan, and God, and Satan, and goats, and corrupted fetuses, and Satan, and did we mention Satan? Blastbeats that sound more like drum machine rolls than anything else, thin buzzy production, words croaked -- sometimes with a chorus-like effect -- celebrate the winners of the dark vs. light championship at the beginning and end of the world. Enthroned aren't terrible. They play their chosen genre with all the requisite musicianship required. They address all of its topics with requisite certainty; they play requisitely well live, and tour and make records in a cyclical way. The question is when it comes to not only the band, but the genre as well is, when did playing good old Nordic black metal become so ho-hum even when played well? Can it be that the music itself has become a rather bland cartoon version of itself? When there are other scenes inspired by the Nordic hordes that have developed this music in all sorts of different directions from the French scene (Alcest), to Tasmania (Striborg), the Northwest of the U.S. (Wolves in the Throne Room) to Japan (Gnome, Hakuja), shouldn't listeners welcome a return to the roots? Not necessarily. When it is played this close to the vest it all comes down to safety and a lack of imagination. And Enthroned is certainly guilty of the former, as well as the latter. [Tetra Karcist was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ Thom JurekKerrang (Magazine) (p.56) - "Enthroned's churning maelstrom of sound still summons an aura of hatred and palpable dread....The atmosphere is perfectly chilling..." $10.45 Although they remained largely without peer when it came to pure Germanic thrash metal, by the time of 1990's Coma of Souls, Kreator's very successful formula had begun to grow a little tired. The fact that they were coming off perhaps their biggest album yet in 1989's Extreme Aggression didn't help matters, and despite its overwhelmingly solid songwriting, Coma of Souls still sounded somewhat repetitive to all but the ...

$12.19 The most striking aspect of Quarterstick's reissue of Understand? is the two bonus tracks that come at the end of the album. Recorded live at Chicago 's Riviera Theater in November 1987, the spirited performances of "Mr. Gridlock" and "I Don't Know" blast through the speakers with an ardent fury that all of the tracks on Understand? so desperately lack. ...

Tetra Karcist album
$9.59 After learning his craft in the early 60's playing bass in groups in the Midlands with such names as Roy Wood (MOVE, ELO, WIZARD), Bev Bevan (MOVE, ELO), Greame Edge (MOODY BLUES) he went into recording, radio and television and even got a mention in the "Pete Frames Family Tree Of Rock Book". The 70's saw the formation of "The Rockin Rockets" a nine piece Rock'n'roll show which successfully toured the college circuit and features four singers (Gerry Levene, Danny King, Mike Sheriden and Brenda Bosworth). Boss was formed in the mid 70's and was immediately signed to "Deram Records" and had a minor hit with the old classic "Mony Mony" In the 80's Jim moved to the county Scene spending ...
| | Very Best Of Gerald Albright CD (2001)
Tetra Karcist CD music
$7.99 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
The liner notes for this can't-miss compilation, of a saxman who was putting the "smooth" into jazz long before radio called it that, promise some serious smackin'. These 11 tunes remind the serious rhythm and jazz fan that Albright's been doing that in powerful, soul-stirring ways since the late '80s. Albright was playing with Anita Baker when he signed to Atlantic and launched his diverse career with Just Between Us in 1987. Sultry tunes like "Bermuda Nights" and "In the Mood" helped define new adult contemporary radio (the maiden name of "smooth jazz") in the early days, but Albright never just wanted to be one thing. Just as his pop-jazz star was in full swing circa 1991, he took an exciting detour and put out the very straight-ahead-oriented disc Live at Birdland West, which only increased his popularity and respect with critics. There are no misses on this greatest-hits package, but the two most exciting cuts come from this date: an intense, highly improvisational "Georgia on My Mind" and jamming "Boss ...
