5 stars Everything Old is New Again
It is worth more than the cost of this DVD just to hear Ella Fitzgerald sing "Lover Man". Add Ray Charles, Cass Elliot, and the Smothers Brothers, and you can't go wrong. Also included are Jonathan Winters, Roy Rogers, and Burt Bacharach accompanying Andy Williams on a medley of Bacharach hits. The audio is amazing, and the picture couldn't be better. During the included interview, Andy Williams states that the music was usually performed live, rather than using dubbing or lip syncing, making this dvd that much more enjoyable. My one disappointment is that a duet with Ella and Andy that is mentioned in the intro has been cut. Also, don't look for Red Buttons or Martha Ray - they're not on this disc, but it doesn't matter. The content of this disc is not a faded nostalgia trip, but instead a vivid reminder of why these performers were at the top. Thinking of all the years Andy Williams was on the air, and the guests who appeared, I can only hope that more of these videos become available soon.

Originally released on Columbia (8815) & Columbia (9333). Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont. This release collects a pair of mid-1960s records from velvet-voiced vocalist Andy Williams. DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, originally issued in '63, was Williams's most successful album, and it spent weeks at BILLBOARD's top spot, remaining on the charts for 107 weeks. ...

In its matching up of Andy Williams titles for a two-fer release, Collectables Records has opted to combine Williams' spring 1972 album Love Theme From "The Godfather" with his spring 1974 album The Way We Were, skipping over his fall 1972 album Alone Again (Naturally) and his fall 1973 album Solitaire. (Those two are together on another disc.) The theory may have been that these two both had something to do with the movies while the two in between did not, but in fact all of these albums take the same approach, more or less. That approach is to have Williams present his interpretations of songs from the pop charts of the period. As it happens, these two albums mark significant milestones for the singer, albeit of opposite sorts. Buoyed by the success of the title track, which was Williams' last Top 40 pop hit, Love Theme From "The Godfather" was his last significant seller, his final gold album. The Way We Were, on the other hand, was a commercial disaster, Williams' first LP to miss the Billboard chart ...

This entry in Collectables' series of discount-priced two-fer reissues of Andy Williams' albums combines two successive releases originally issued in 1969 (Get Together With Andy Williams) and 1970 (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head). The compilers have sequenced the albums out of order, probably mistakenly, since the original catalog numbers would have suggested that Raindrops came first. The compilation would have worked better if the albums were presented in release order. Get Together was a typical Andy Williams album of the time, one on which he simply listened to what was on the radio in the spring of 1969 and picked out some tunes he liked -- Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, a couple of songs from the musical Hair that had become pop hits. He wasn't particularly effective on such material, but he was much stronger when taking on a big ballad like "Yesterday When I Was Young" or "Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet (A Time for Us)." Raindrops appears to have started out (prior to Get Together) as a far more ambitious effort, an album on which Williams had Mason Williams put together a folk-pop suite of material by himself, ...
