Paradox Of Life album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue ...

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Paradox Of Life CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR ...

| | Sheri Kling Heartland CD (2005)
Paradox Of Life album
$18.99 "If you want to choose a fabulous album, this is the one." Review of "Heartland," Indie-Music.com, July 9, 2005* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Music for the journey that is heart-rooted and spirit-seeking. * Strong lyrics...engaging melodies* Positive...uplifting* Dynamic guitar...rich vocals"Sheri Kling combines robust vocals with simple, earnest lyricism, switching from introspective acoustic ballads to more freewheelin' honky-tonk throw-downs. ~ Creative Loafing, Atlanta* * * "The alt-country flavored 'Heartland' showcases [Kling's] songwriting and a fine band of Atlanta musicians..." (Shane Harrison, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, May 2005) * * *Sheri Kling is an accomplished singer/songwriter, guitarist and long-time spiritual sojourner whose music is built on rich vocals and dynamic guitar and resonates with a certain organic authenticity through compositions that are heart-rooted and spirit-seeking. Each song is another way of looking at what is real, what is true, and what invites us all into a more passionate and well-lived life. Reviews:* Indie-Music.com (July 9, 2005)by Catherine L. Tully: "This woman's voice is like the auditory version of chocolate cake -- rich and yummy! If Annie Lennox sang this style of music, this is what it would sound like. The voices are very similar. Sheri Kling sang, and I listened. And listened. The whole CD was enjoyable, and I just couldn't get enough of the beauty of this woman's voice. That is a good way to describe the sound that Kling's voice has: a woman's voice. There is no girl here, rather a woman singing about life and reflecting on experiences. I like to think about the perfect atmosphere to listen to a CD in. With Kling's album, I imagined a balcony in the summertime, high above the street with a glass of white wine. It has that soulful feel to it -- the kind of music you think to. Usually I review the tracks one by one, but with this CD it is impossible. Every time I thought I had a favorite, I heard another song that I was wild about. (Although if pressed for ONLY one, I would have to choose track three, "Light the Fire Tonight.")If you want to choose a fabulous album, this is ...

Paradox Of Life album
$21.25 The good news, though, is that while the set focuses almost exclusively on the band's major-label years and features many tracks from their three albums as a trio (UP, REVEAL, and AROUND THE SUN), it still smokes. Peter Buck's mesmerizing arpeggios set aflame opener "I Took Your Name" from MONSTER and the fan fave "Orange Crush" from GREEN, while Michael Stipe's undeniable pipes captivate on UP's gospel-tinged "Walk Unafraid" and the protest song "Final Straw" from AROUND THE SUN. Twice the band dips into I.R.S. territory on a tremolo-soaked "Cuyahoga" and a revved-up "Don't Go Back to Rockville," in which bassist Mike Mills gets his star turn on lead vocals.
The collection also includes a DVD of the entire show, which reveals that although the band was never groomed for stadiums like their '80s counterparts U2, they could still whip a crowd into a frenzy and devastate live--even with a hired gun on the drums.
