Leslie West was the axeman who led Mountain to glory in the late 1960s as America's power-trio answer to Cream, but he's also enjoyed an extensive solo career. NEW YORK STATE OF MIND, part of a series of formerly bootlegged live West recordings, hails from a 1994 show that finds West revisiting some former glories by delving into such riff-rocking Mountain classics as "Mississippi Queen" and "Nantucket Sleighride," as well as guitar-god showpieces like Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile," and even a rocked-up take on the Billy Joel-penned tune that gives this album its title.
New York State Of Mind was recorded live at The Lone Star in 1994 while Leslie was promoting his then new album of Dodgin The Dirt. The performance features two tracks from the album Whiskey Train and the Billy Joel cover New York State of Mind. Billy Joel of course was a friend of Leslies and grew up with him in Long Island where the two played in various competing bands. Other tracks included in this live set are Mississippi Queen, Never In My Life, Blood Of The Sun and Nantucket Sleighride.
