After making the strongest and most consistent album of his career with 1981's Escape Artist, Garland Jeffreys seemed poised to finally make a genuine commercial breakthrough, and with Bob Clearmountain back in the producer's chair, he recorded Guts for Love in 1983, a polished and accessible set of songs about the joys and challenges of grown-up romance. However, while "polished and accessible" is doubtless what Jeffreys and Clearmountain were aiming for, there's little arguing that they got more of it than they really wanted. Dominated by slick dance grooves and keyboards, Guts for Love tries so hard to be radio friendly that it unwittingly became the most faceless album of Jeffreys' career, and as hard as he tries to push some passion into the songs with his vocals, the surfaces of the production are so clean and shiny that nothing sticks to them. It doesn't help that Guts for Love isn't one of Jeffreys' more memorable collections of songs; he can write with intelligence and force about how difficult and rewarding love can be, and he delivers a few top-shelf numbers on the subject with "Fidelity," "Surrender," and the title tune, but there are a few facile throwaways such as "Dance Up," "Shout," and "Rebel Love" (an especially weak reggae offering which you wouldn't expect from a guy who collaborated with Linton Kwesi Johnson on his previous studio set). And the cover of "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" proves David Sanborn is no substitute for Junior Walker. The final two songs, "El Salvador" and "American Backslide," recall the edgier themes of Jeffreys' best work, but their place in the running order suggests the artist knew he was propping up a house of cards. There's too much that's good on Guts for Love to utterly dismiss it -- Jeffreys remains a superb and wildly underrated singer, and he's in fine voice here -- but that doesn't change the fact it's a weak and disappointing effort from someone capable of far more. ~ Mark Deming

Guts For Love
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD showcases the shifting line-ups and many moods of the early to mid-'80s Chills. ...
| | Best Tango Album In The World, Ever! CDs (2003)
Guts For Love
$17.49 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little ...
| | Killing Floor CD (1995) (Import) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak; Germany
Guts For Love
$25.39 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in a heavy cardboard gatefold sleeve, and killer sound. This is a raw, immediate, overdriven, psychedelic blues record that offers ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Guts For Love
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset ...

Guts For Love
$10.15 One of the highlights of last year’s revered Austin City Limits Music festival happened when Sharon Jones pulled a young man named Nakia onstage for an impromptu duet. Jones quickly discovered what the cheering crowd already knew – he was one of Austin’s brightest new stars. In fact, Nakia “brought the crowd to its feet,” with his own set the next day the Austin Chronicle reported. “He’s a soul man all the way,” the paper raved. The next time Jones made an appearance in Texas, it is no surprise who she asked to come sing with her. And all it takes is a listen to his debut album Water to Wine (out April 7) to understand why, as Nakia (pronounced nuh-kee-yah) is “the real deal,” Singer & Musician magazine proclaims. Recorded with producer and guitarist Mac McNabb, the album summons the joyous rhythms of southern-fried brown-eyed soul; buoyed by his band, The Southern Cousins --and his back-up singers The Fresh Up Girls.Along with his potent voice, Nakia shows off his writing by renewing the Stax/Volt spirit with “On The Bus” complete with a “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” whistle part, and a groove as deep and wide as the Mississippi. He struts on “Choose Your Poison” -- and testifies like a true believer on the title track and “All Over You.” Water to Wine also includes songs written by and with Michael Fracasso, one of Austin’s most acclaimed singer-songwriters, as well as a number co-written by the Austin hit country songwriter Monte Warden — two of Nakia’s many supportive peers within the city’s music scene. Together, they take listeners on a grand and scenic tour of Southern soul and R&B from the church (“Safe Inside”) to the street (“There Goes The Neighborhood”) and to the bayou (“Elizabeth Lee”.)Growing ...

Guts For Love
$11.39 Hailing from New Orleans, "Perils of Glamour" evokes a style and sound that immediately conjures up the ghost of the 80s - albeit with stronger guitars and a more modern, bombastic delivery. Fronted by female vocalist Andrée Ice, this 6-track exploratory EP/CD pays homage to Terri Nunn and Shirley Manson, as well as the obscure UK band, "The Photos."The first track, "Lightning," bristles with strong guitars and an infectious chorus melody. Track 2, the synth-pop ode to unrequited ...
