Hey Lover album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Hey Lover CD music
$13.05 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, ...
| | Avett Brothers I And Love And You CD (2009)
Hey Lover music CDs
$11.25 North Carolina sibling duo the Avett Brothers return in 2009, fresh off a few years of building a cult following for its melodic and rootsy alt-bluegrass sound, with the subdued I AND LOVE AND YOU. The opening single and title track basks in piano-pop splendor in an odd mix of Beach Boys, Byrds, and the Band.
The Avett Brothers continue charting the same musical course as EMOTIONALISM and MIGNONETTE on major-label debut I AND LOVE AND YOU, despite the presence of hands-on producer Rick Ruben. The country-folk duo continue to add elements of pop and hillbilly rock to a country/bluegrass foundation ...

| | Randy & The Radiants Memphis Beat - The Sun Recordings 1964-1966 CD (2007)
Hey Lover album
$14.75 Randy Haspel was a 16-year-old kid whose band the Radiants played dances and frat parties in Memphis, TN when one day, a fan at a show offered to introduce the band to his father. The fan was Knox Phillips, and his father, Sam Phillips, happened to run Sun Records, the legendary independent label that gave the world Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and many other trailblazing acts. Randy & the Radiants recorded for Sun during the label's waning days in the mid-'60s, with Sam Phillips producing most of their sessions, and Memphis Beat, which collects two dozen of the band's Sun sides, documents a curious time and place where the influences of the British Invasion and the garage rock explosion were being felt at the house that rockabilly built. On record, Randy & the Radiants sounded significantly tighter and more professional than the average teenage band of the era, and they had an outstanding songwriter in guitarist Bob Simon, though Phillips occasionally prodded them to cover the likes of "Boppin' the Blues" and "Blue Suede Shoes," and they also tackled a few blues numbers and British Invasion hits. Haspel and his bandmates had a strong knack for harmonies, and there are moments on Memphis Beat where the Radiants sound ...

$51.25 | | Edguy F***Ing With Fire Live CDs (2009)
Hey Lover CD music
$14.35 If there is one thing that, above all else, sets Edguy apart from so many of the Iron Maiden-worshipping, Judas Priest-loving, Queensrÿche-adoring power metal revival bands that emerged in Europe in the 1990s and 2000s, it is their sense of humor. Edguy don't beat listeners over the head with it--they aren't humorous to the point of turning their work into slapstick comedy--but there is just enough humor and just enough irony in their material to keep them from taking on the ultra-serious tone that characterizes so many European power metal revival bands. And the German headbangers' sense of fun is alive and well on FUCKING WITH FIRE: LIVE, which focuses on a 2006 concert in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Available as either a two-CD set or a DVD, FUCKING WITH FIRE: LIVE documents a show that is big, boisterous, and over-the-top in a way that one expects a power metal show to be. But Edguy always find the humor in those power metal clichés and stereotypes, and their sense of humor serves them well on inspired performances of crowd-pleasers like "Tears of a Mandrake" from 2001's MANDRAKE, "King of Fools" from 2004's HELLFIRE CLUB, and "Fucking with Fire" from 2006's ROCKET RIDE. Another thing that separates Edguy from other European power metal revival bands ...
