Falco: Everything film
$12.59 In the aftermath of punk, the early 1980s saw many earnest young men picking up keyboards, adopting a deadpan demeanor, and selling millions of records in the process. Soft Cell stood apart from the pack, however, by combining some tongue-in-cheek performances with seedy imagery from the sex-strewn streets of London's Soho. Charismatic singer Marc Almond was clearly born to be a star, and struck up a lucrative musical partnership with keyboard player Dave Ball, producing songs such as "Say Hello Wave Goodbye," "Bedsitter," and their infamous cover of the Northern Soul classic "Tainted Love." This release offers a selection of their music videos, with all the aforementioned titles included, ...
| | Fool's Gold CD (2009)
Falco: Everything review
$8.79 Starting out as Dan Fogelberg's backing band, Fool's Gold decided to strike out on their own with this eponymous disc. Full of high harmony and easy country-rock tunes, Fool's Gold will warm the hearts of anyone who is a fan of such bands as the Eagles or Poco. Highlights include "Rain, Oh Rain," "Rollin' Fields and Meadows," and a cover of Fogelberg's own "Old Tennessee." Helped out by such friends as Glyn Johns, Glenn Frey, and Joe Walsh along the way, Fool's Gold has just the right blend of country and rock to entice listeners to enjoy this fine album. ~ James Chrispell
In a similar spirit to artists like Extra Golden and NOMO, the music of L.A.'s Fool's Gold is fundamentally rooted in -- not merely inspired by -- international (and more specifically, African) sounds and styles, even if they essentially emerged within the context of American indie rock (for one thing, three of the band's members overlap with the more straight-ahead indie outfit Foreign Born.) This self-titled debut finds the group -- a 12-strong cohort led by bassist/vocalist Luke Top and lead guitarist Lewis Pesacov, featuring a pair of saxophonists and a full four members devoted to percussion and chant-like auxiliary vocals -- delving energetically into eight spicy, polyrhythmic, highly danceable compositions whose emphasis is firmly on groove and riff, as opposed to songs, per se. Top's curiously resonant, commanding vocals do provide a focal point (he sings primarily in Hebrew, a significant personal distinction for the Israeli-born vocalist, but one which non-Hebrew-speaking listeners will find merely adds another subtle layer to the general ethnic ambiguity at play here), but ...
| | Andrea Bocelli - Tuscan Skies DVD (2001)
Falco: Everything DVD
$24.09 Internationally acclaimed tenor Andrea Bocelli is one of the music world's biggest crossover successes, having brought his classical vocals to the realm of mainstream popularity. The Tuscan vocalist is explored as both a person and an artist in TUSCAN SKIES, which intersperses clips of his everyday life and recreations of his childhood memories with music videos. Clips of his daily home life which feature Bocelli with his adorable sons, are filmed in grainy black and white, while the lush Tuscan landscape is filmed in spectacular color.

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Falco: Everything movie DVD
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame Street's Luis, duets with Forbes here in Spanish and English). The album's first few tracks are among its most playful, including the slinky yet winking "Ohayoo Ohio" and the French confection "Ou Est Ma Tete?" While Pink Martini gets almost too cute for their own good with "And Then You're Gone" and "But Now I'm Back," a pair of songs about a quarreling couple inspired by Franz Schubert's "Fantasy Piano for Four Hands" and featuring NPR justice correspondent Ari Shapiro on the latter's vocals, SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' second half is among their finest work. "Over the Valley" is a standout, a ballad so ...
