A mixed bag comprised of three new songs, five live recordings, one remix, and one untitled secret track, 2007's obviously disjointed The Challenger may seem like an ill-advised release coming from Los Angeles' fast rising technical metal darlings Intronaut. But its genesis does have a well-grounded explanation in the previously announced departure of founding guitarist and vocalist Leon Del Muerte, whose tenure the band chose to punctuate by releasing all of their remaining collaborative material, rather than carrying it over into their next cycle of work. This, as it were, is a perfectly legitimate choice since, like all Intronaut's previous releases, The Challenger's scant virgin offerings contain music of exceedingly high grade. Of the three newly penned songs, both the rip-roaring opening title track and the more laid-back, at times mellifluously jazzy "Deep Architecture" are as engaging and imaginative as fans have come to expect from the group; but the spectacular "Whittler of Fortune" may just be the Everest of Intronaut's career thus far, spinning high-velocity melodic picking against their typically complicated metallic creations. Of the live recordings, two represent the band's debut EP, Null, and were captured at L.A.'s Mountain Bar in late 2005, while three originate from its full-length follow-up, Void, and a February 2007 show at Tempe's Clubhouse. All benefit from excellent sound quality (though a little crowd noise, if you must have that with your live music) and really shine a spotlight on Intronaut's remarkable instrumental command, even from a concert stage, and with emphasis on Danny Walker's almost superhuman drumming. As for the remix of "Burning These Days," it's more of a chop-up job than anything else, but nothing's wrong with that; leaving only the aforementioned secret track (really just leftover noises and the band sound-checking) to scatter the remnants of Intronaut Mark I into the wind -- bring on Mark II. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Audio Remixer: Sacha Dunable.

Aftershok is a four-piece classic metal band that showcases aggressive guitars and powerful, melodic vocals. Their sound is firmly grounded in the best traditions of classic metal and hard rock, but through their commitment to strong songwriting and musicianship they have forged a style that is all their own.Aftershok began in the summer of 1996 as a collaboration between vocalist Vic Hix and guitarist George Mihalovich. Vic and George M quickly realized that they shared the same vision for a classic metal/melodic hard rock band, and made the decision to concentrate on developing the project until they found just the right individuals to solidify the line-up. Fast-forward a few years; veteran ...

Lori Bell CD  (2002)

Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings.Lori has studied with such esteemed pedagogues as Frederick Baker, Damian Bursill-Hall, Judith Mendenhall, Claude Monteux, and Phil Cohen. Her debut on Discovery Records, “Love Will Win” with pianist Dave Mackay and bassist Andy Simpkins, received warm praise and four and a half stars (out of five) from the esteemed Leonard Feather and was selected on the Grammy list for Best New Artist in 1983. A second Discovery disc, “Take Me To Brazil”, demonstrated her ability to maintain a high level of inspiration. This album featured the first of several fine original compositions and was enthusiastically given four stars by the Los Angeles Times in 1989. Over the past 15 years, Ms. Bell’s many performances in venues such as the Wadsworth Theater, The Neurosciences Institute, and the Kennedy Center, established her reputation, among musicians and audiences alike, as a remarkably vital interpreter. A recent performance at The Vic was exemplary of this quality, prompting the critic for the L.A. Times to note that “Bell’s playing - on C flute and the lower, darker sounding alto flute - was gorgeous, filled with light and air on the ballads, briskly inventive on her bop-tinged improvisations”. In 1998, this artistic maturity was delightfully demonstrated with her stellar work with Dave Mackay and guitarist/vocalist Ron Satterfield in the trio INTERPLAY. Their self-titled first album was selected on the 1999 Grammy ballot in four categories, including Best Jazz Solo by Ms. Bell on Pat Metheny’s, ”It’s Just Talk.” The disc, which garnered four ...

Balance Of Power was started in 1995 with a handful of well-known London area rockers. Their first album, "When the World Falls Down," was released the following year by Pony Canyon for Japan. After the success of their first album, Pony Canyon became quite eager for the band to create a follow-up, but began putting pressure on them regarding Tony Ritchie's vocal style. They wanted the band to have a more dynamic singer with a greater range. After the first audition with Lance King, there was no decision to be made, he was the ideal candidate and he was in. Tony continued to fulfill the role of songwriter. About this time, guitarist Paul Curtis was becoming fed up with life in London, and decided it was time for him to retire from music completely. Tony Ritchie and Lionel Hicks had both previously worked with a guitarist by the name of Pete Southern. They knew Pete would be the perfect fit for Balance of Power and brought him in to take Paul's place. For Balance of Power's second release, "Book of Secrets," inspiration was taken from "The Bible Code", a book by Michael Drosnin. The album was released in 1998 and received rave reviews from all over Europe and Japan. The songs "Seven Days into Nevermore" and "Miracles and Dreams" were in heavy rotation on all of the syndicated metal shows in Europe and Asia. Following up on the success of "Book of Secrets," Balance Of Power returned to the studio and found inspiration for their next album, "Ten More Tales of Grand Illusion," released in 1999. Balance of Power began their first ever tour to back "Ten More Tales" later that year. They played 19 shows in 21 days, finally able to put to rest rumors that they were just a studio band. The tour was deemed the most successful metal tour in Germany over the past 2-3 years, with sold out venues across the country. Writing began immediately on their fourth album titled "Perfect Balance." "Perfect Balance" was released to rave reviews in 2001 with it's mix of incredible vocals and progressive guitar work. Balance Of Power played their first US tour date in November at Prog Power 2 in Atlanta, alongside Ark, Evergrey, Kamelot, and Symphony X. In 2002 ...
