Live album
$16.29 This is where it all opens up and changes. Neal Morse is the former frontman of Spock's Beard, the California prog rock monolith. While not his first solo effort, Testimony it is easily his most compelling and provocative. Testimony is a concept album based around Morse's personal testimonial of his life before and after encountering his center, Jesus Christ. Before any of you reach for the mouse button to click off, it might be worth reading a little further to find out why this is musically one of the more engaging progressive rock records in particular and rock & roll albums in general this year. Morse's vision is still one that is sophisticated and sprawling. His attention to detail is even greater and he brings so many elements into his mix that it will make the punters' heads spin. Here, folk, prog, classical, and beautiful singing and arrangements entwine with a challenging, moving, and provocative story. Conceptually, Testimony is divided into five parts over two CDs. Disc one features a gorgeous overture and elements of Laurel Canyon rock that are contrasted with gargantuan tracks loaded with keyboards and strings as the story moves from looking over a life spent in innocence and then loneliness and darkness. Disc two concentrates on the time period after conversion, with themes of transformation, surrender, willingness, and beatitude as well as struggling with doubt -- only to persevere in the wealth and mystery that come with discovering meaning in life.
Production-wise, Testimony is seamless, full of fantastic dynamics and dramatic layering of instruments, voices, and "ambiences." Really, if Brian Wilson were into the big rock & roll business, the textured nuances found here would suit him fine, even if the screaming ...

$17.49 Spock's Beard return to the music stores with their first record since Light in June 2004. The first seven tracks of this album comprise a conceptual suite entitled "A Flash Before My Eyes," based on a story by John Boegehold. It's about the experiences of a man in the process of experiencing a car wreck as it happens and watching his life flash before him as it passes out of him. He recalls everything from his parents' separation on Christmas, to high school football games and meeting his wife and creating a life with her. It all ends at the end of the flash. The overture, "Prelude to the Past," is all big prog symphonic rock Former frontman and guitarist Neal Morse's gigantic presence is still missed, but the ambition here is sweeping. Nonetheless, drummer and frontman Nick D'Virgilio is putting forth the effort and he has a compelling presence as a singer, but his lyrics aren't yet there, they still tell more than show. The contrast between Boegehold's narrative passages and the song lyrics that illustrate them is harsh. The music, while more "accessible" than in the past and harder in its rock-ist intentions, still has plenty of flair and verve, though one does miss the wonderfully labyrinthine passages and surprises of yore. ~ Thom Jurek

$13.19 On the continuation of 2003's Testimony Neal Morse further explores his spirituality and pushes his musical abilities to the hilt with the enigmatically titled ?. This 12-song offering surrounds itself thematically around the Tabernacle, the biblical dwelling place of God. Drawing from references of mythology, Christianity, archeology, and history, Morse weaves a captivating narrative that is complemented by a solid stable of some of prog rock's elite. Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, Steve Hackett, and fellow Spock's Beard alumnus and sibling Alan Morse all make guest appearances and contribute outstanding performances to a score ...

$10.15 For the 2005 hit comedy WEDDING CRASHERS, the soundtrack producers assembled a collection of (mostly) contemporary alternative rock. Ben Gibbard, an early-2000s compilation fixture between his bands Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service, shows up with the former group on "The Sound of Settling," a catchy dose of power-pop that kicks off this set. Other standout acts include Bloc Party (who contribute the chiming "This Modern Love"), Rilo Kiley (the twangy "More Adventurous"), and the Flaming Lips (the dreamy, previously unreleased "Mr. Ambulance Driver"). Though the film is largely set at wedding receptions, "The Chicken Dance" and the "Electric Slide" are mercifully absent. Instead, the soundtrack presents a remix of the Isley ...

| | Full Armor Against The Flow CD (2007)
Live CD music
$13.15 Full Armor is a Christian band consisting of six young adults. The band gets its name from the Bible passage found in Ephesians 6: 12-17, where Paul dares us all to put on the "full armor" of God. The band does so through their music. Every song written and performed by Full Armor is spiritually moving and melodically stimulating. Full Armor recently finished their debut album, Against the Flow, which released on January 5th, 2007. The band is very anxious to spread their music through their album and performances, and welcomes all opportunities to do so. Full Armor was formed when the pastor of a local church explained to Douglas Q. Hutchings (the bands manager) a strong need for a youth ministry at his church. The pastor went on to explain that his goal was to have one of the church's six services a week set aside for teenagers. Douglas quickly pulled together his many musician friends to create this much needed band. Soon after, the band began to play at church every Sunday afternoon at 4:30, and is still doing so to this day. The music at this service is contemporary and upbeat, offering the church something it has never experienced before. Full Armor leads this worship experience each week at church and also plays concerts in their local area. Full Armor will be touring this winter and spring in promotion of their new album. The band is hopeful ...
