Anneke Van Giersbergen's abrupt departure from the Gathering was understandably traumatic for their small but loyal fan base, signaling the end of an era for one of the most quietly iconoclastic and influential acts of the '90s, one responsible in large part for the proliferation of female-fronted heavy metal bands across the European mainland. But listeners who had stuck with the Gathering throughout their most recent, almost entirely post-metal efforts will actually be hardly surprised at Van Giersbergen's new direction and its slightly more pronounced commitment to gentle sonic dreamscapes, intimate singer/songwriter fragility, and occasional electronic sounds. The difference really is minimal, and since Air's mellow opening track, "Beautiful One," could have feasibly fit right into the Gathering's 2006 album Home (as could have later offerings like "Day After Yesterday," "My Girl," and "Lost and Found"), the reality is only driven home by the pulsing electronic foundation used on the second cut, "Witnesses," which ironically still packs major heavy guitar crunch as well. Van Giersbergen and her bandmates barely touch the hard stuff from here on out, however, only briefly relapsing for the inanely named "You Are Nice" and the second half of the quite striking "Trail of Grief." Rather, they unsurprisingly prefer to keep the arrangements light and minimal for predominantly wistful fare like "Yalin," "Take Care of Me," "Ice Water," and "Sunken Soldiers' Ball," which conspicuously features a discreet but copacetic horn section. Naturally, these songs' uncluttered frameworks only serve to better showcase Anneke's stunning, still mesmerizing, and instantly recognizable soprano, which is sure to melt the harshest critic into helpless mush on the heart-rending madrigal "Come Wander" or the vulnerable closer, "Asleep." In summary, those who gave up on the Gathering circa the transitional If_Then_Else will clearly find no redeeming metallic about-face here; but those enamored with Anneke's voice and talent, above all else, as showcased on all of that band's efforts over the years should be more than satisfied with Agua de Annique's debut. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Air music CDs
$9.59 Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."
Though Jimmy Raney recorded under his own name as early as 1953, it's this 1956 set that is regarded as his arrival as a leader. Raney is as fine an arranger as he is a guitarist. These eight tracks with ...
| | Mystic Assignment My Singing Heart EP CD (2003)
Air songs
$10.15 The Mystic Assignment is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Gerry Saenz. My Singing Heart is his debut ep for Nervous Fish Records. On this release, Gerry, along with Producer and Engineer Eddie Alfaro, were planning on doing a full scaled production (including keyboards, string section, etc.) But upon completing the basic tracks, which included Gerry's guitar work and vocals (and Eddie Alfaro on acoustic and electric percussion )they agreed that the results sounded good and decided not to add any other elements - leaving room for the listener to concentrate on the "star" of the show - Saenz's strong songwriting, guitar work and vocals. Compared by many to a pre-Islamic Cat Stevens, Gerry can stand side by side with many of today's more innovative artist, such as Badly Drawn Boy or Beck. The journey to now began when Gerry, at the age of 12, received his first guitar. His father, an aspiring musician, taught him his first three chords. Within a year, he was composing his first songs - many songs with just those three chords. Growing up, he would divide his time between Texas (where he was born) and Oregon. Spending most of his teenage years in Oregon, he became a part of the local music scene, paying his dues in a few bands, playing garages and backyard parties. Meanwhile, in his own time, he was secretly crafting his own songs. In the mid-eighties, Gerry permanently moved back to Texas. While there, he decided to put a few of his songs down on tape. Not having any equipment, he resorted to other means to get his ideas down ( from a small cassette recorder to using two boom boxes hooked up and doing many over-dubs!) Fast-foward to the mid-nineties, he met up with a musician named Eli who had some recording equipment, and the two started collaborating on a few of Gerry's originals. Still not completely comfortable with what he was doing, he originally planned on finding a vocalist to front his work. After having no luck in his search, Gerry decided to do it himself. During this time Gerry would keep in touch with his nephew Alex (4 years his minor), who was also a guitarist in his own right (thanks to Gerry passing the torch and teaching him his first chords.) When Gerry would finish something with Eli, he would mail it to Alex in Washington. ...
