| | Rake CD (2000)
Cotton Club New York Presents Frankie Newton album
$16.19 Rake is your standard free jazz sax/bass/drums trio. The album opens with "Calling," a strong high-energy number showcasing Broscoe's alto sax - he listened to a few Evan Parker records. The drummer is very busy (in a Roger Turner way). Sometimes all instrumentalists are on percussion ("Skree"), in other times a lot of room is allowed for soloing. This is not a striking record, but it shows hearty potential and promise. This first installment is not flawless: the bass is way too loud on "There" (it even distorts at some point) and there isn't really nothing new in playing two saxophones at once, let alone naming the improv "Two Winds." But it seems this trio is heading in the right direction. ~ François Couture
David Broscoe, alto & tenor saxophones, bassoon, percussion Jamie Gulikson, drums & suitcase Rory Magill, drums, bass, bells, melodica What the critics are saying; To say that free improvisation has fallen out of fashion is akin to bemoaning the so-called 'death of conversation'. One might postulate that conversation has died because of the cultural dominance of television or the Internet, but that doesn't mean that people don't still talk long into the night about important matters of the heart and mind. Conversation has just gone underground -- so goes free jazz. Driven into dark places by the rise of music that looks backward to the '50's and beyond, free music -- jazz's equivalent of the late-night, unbridled conversation -- remains alive, even where you would least expect it. ... Enter rake, a musically adventurous trio based in Ottawa, Canada's capital of anything but free music. With the unusual instrumentation of two percussionists ...

| | Neil Lamb Life Goes On CD (2007)
Cotton Club New York Presents Frankie Newton music CDs
$16.45 Life Goes OnOn his latest solo recording, Life Goes On , Neil Lamb juxtaposes some lovely arrangements of familiar jazz standards with his own blues, rock, and pop influenced jazz compositions. His tunes are honest, mature and anyone who has been in a relationship for more than five minutes will connect with them. The music of Life Goes On is jazz with a singer/songwriter vibe, and a pop sensibility. Neil Lamb wants to reach people. Although he often plays “lead”, “rhythm “ and “bass” simultaneously , connecting with an audience through the shared enjoyment of sounds and emotions is more fun and ultimately more important than trying to be a clever guitar player. He is a romantic (in the classical sense) preferring music that is often pretty with clear singing melodies, and his lyrics distill a relationship down to its essence with a few carefully crafted phrases. Background Neil Lamb was born in Brunswick, Maine in 1950 and began piano lessons at the age of 10. After seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, he switched to the guitar and has never looked back. In 1973 Lamb earned a B.A. in music at the University of York, Heslington, England. At York he studied modern composition with Wilfrid Mellers and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Bernard Rands. While in England, he studied briefly with London jazz guitarist Derek Bailey, whose musical aesthetic has heavily influenced the New York free jazz scene. Bailey premiered Lamb's "Heartspace", an original work for solo guitar, at the University of York. During the 1970's Lamb was fully immersed in the free jazz scene performing throughout England in a jazz trio with avant-garde pianist Steve Beresford and drummer Dave Herzfeld. When he returned to the US, Lamb shifted focus and began studying the 20th century mainstream jazz masters . He concentrated ...
