Few performances in history are as legendary - or as controversial - as Dylan's 1965 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival. In a single galvanizing instant, Dylan plugged an entire generation in, forever changing not only the way the music was made, but the way it was heard. This DVD puts you in the audience for Dylan's Newport performances from 1963 through that pivotal set in 1965 in this film directed by Murray Lerner. This incredible film is now available for the first time anywhere. The DVD features over 80 minutes of performances, most of which has never been seen before. Featured artists include Joan Baez, Freedom Singers, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Johnny Cash. After plugging in at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, Bob Dylan's break with the folk scene was complete. The ensuing sonic assault caused pandemonium among the crowd, including an apoplectic Pete Seeger, and ruptured Dylan's standing among many of his longtime fans. This collection of Dylan's performances at the festival, taken over three years and filled with plenty of never-before-seen footage, charts his rapid evolution as an artist. Beginning in 1963, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR captures Dylan playing the folk and protest songs that endeared him to so many of his generation--including "Only A Pawn In Their Game," "Chimes of Freedom," and "It Ain't Me, Babe" (with Joan Baez)--before he turned toward a more abstract songwriting style, coupled with a forceful rock 'n' roll sound, that climaxed in a frenetic, electrified performance of "Maggie's Farm," and "Like a Rolling Stone" in 1965. I am just amazed at the clarity of the sound - I'm sure they weren't trying for 5.1 mix surround sound back in 1964. All of the performances are recorded outside, and you can see the breeze "blowin in the wind" behind Bob -- leaves of tres are fluttering and Bob's jacket sleeves are rippling. I don't know how, but those few little boom mikes hanging in the air caught the sound, and it is wonderful. A fresh and eager Dylan in 1963 grows up before our eyes into the swaggering king of everything in just two years. Highlights include Only a Pawn in Their Game sung with Joan Baez, Mr. Tambourine Man, and Don't Think Twice It's All Right. Then there are the two electric performances that changed everything and blew the doors off the folk and rock and roll world - a sneering Maggie's Farm and a tight and exciting version of Like a Rolling Stone, in its first public performance ever. It is quite amazing to have full footage and clean sound of that legendary performance, once and for all. I have read about it from dozens of writers in a multitude of styles - but their words do not convey the power and the majesty of that performance. I have watched it five times already - I just hit previous and back it up and play Rolling Stone again. Dylan forever.

It does seem strange, very strange indeed, to be hearing an official release of this historic concert, which has been available as a bootleg for decades. The Halloween gig at Philharmonic Hall in New York was a special part of the tour for Another Side of Bob Dylan, arguably his greatest acoustic recording.
