(2 Customer Reviews)
Following the chart-topping pop punk of their first three albums, GOOD MORNING REVIVAL is to Good Charlotte what WARNING was to their obvious stylistic forebears, Green Day: an attempt to expand the stylistic confines of their music without losing sight of what their fans want to hear. GOOD MORNING REVIVAL isn't trying to capture critical favor, nor is it a self-important concept album or stylistic experiment. Instead, twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden incorporate new and different musical influences into their now familiar sound, and the brothers' lyrics feature a newfound maturity and personal viewpoint that was not always so obvious on their earlier albums. Indeed, the power ballad "Where Would We Be," a paean to Joel's break-up with his pop princess ex, Hilary Duff, is the most autobiographical song so far in the band's oeuvre. Elsewhere, the moody, pessimistic "The River" and the defiantly optimistic closer "March On" neatly define the album's emotional poles.Spin (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's Madden's search for love in the L.A. wasteland that gives REVIVAL a certain charm." Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "[W]ith a high premium put on infectious choruses and razor-sharp melodic hooks." -- Grade: B- Kerrang (Magazine) (pp.46-47) - "They still have a knack for a mammoth chorus....Love is a major theme...and it's woven throughout the album like an insistent string, the thread holding it all together." | | Jesper Thilo Strike Up The Band CD (2000)
Good Morning Revival
$9.05 The title of this album is a bit off the mark, implying that the session will be pretty much devoted to up-tempo traditional jazz. Not so. While there are barnburners, they are balanced with very good melodic ballad renderings. Even the up-tempo material has character and substance, not at all like the mindless blowing that one finds too often in CD bins these days.
Jesper Thilo is Denmark's most famous sax man, and one of its most prominent jazz players irrespective of instrument. Living in Denmark, he's had the opportunity to perform with many top-flight jazz musicians. With its traditional support of jazz, that country has always been a favorite spot for top American musicians to visit and, for several, to settle in. Basically, Thilo is from the same Lester Young school for tenors as Brew Moore, who was a resident of Copenhagen during the last years of his life. But Thilo's playing also acknowledges the influences of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Ben Webster, and Johnny Hodges. His Hodges-like rendition of "Old Folks" is one of Strike Up the Band's highlights. Thilo's work on this album is masterful and inventive throughout. His "Willow Weep for Me" is tender and expressive as he blows new life into Ann Ronell's classic.
Thilo is fortunate to have the services of equally outstanding and experienced players who possess more than their share of improvisational talent. The group has a lot of fun with the melody line of "Strike Up the Band." The blues tune "Topsy" is played at medium tempo, recalling the version by Ike Quebec's Swing Seven in 1945. Australian Bob Barnard shows that he is as skillful on cornet as on trumpet, as amply demonstrated on "After You've Gone" and "Someday You'll Be Sorry." The inestimable Swiss piano player Henri Chaix provides some special ...
| | Sarah Dougher Bluff CD (2001)
Good Morning Revival
$11.49 The Bluff is signature Sarah Dougher, with deeply bare, honest, and piercing ruminations on the struggle to balance intellect and emotion and finding hope and healing amid love's losses. Backed by a gritty, almost '60s psychedelic rock soundtrack, listeners will be hard-pressed to not feel the album rumbling their insides. Dougher's second full-length album -- The Walls Ablaze was her first -- boils over and brews steadily, much like the human experience. Highlights include "Must Believe," a delicious throwback to '60s rock (think Jefferson Airplane), the toasty folk-inspired "My Kingdom," and Dougher's worthy remake of the 1962 blues piano song "It's Raining." Probably the most affecting cut on The Bluff, however, is its delicate and lulling title track. Open-ended in its meaning, the song will leave listeners in a state of reflection long after the last note has resonated. The Bluff is anything but. This album wraps around listeners like a warm and snug comforter, with enough scratchy patches to gently remind listeners of life's harsher realities. ~ Liana Jonas
Sarah Dougher has been working as a musician, writer and teacher for over ten years. She has released eight records on independent labels with her solo work and her collaborative band projects, touring internationally, and receiving press coverage in publications from the New York Times to Rolling Stone. In January 2001, she had a residency at New York’s Knitting Factory. For the past three years, she has been working on a song cycle entitled Harper’s Arrow, that grew out of a project grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the Portland area’s primary arts funding organization. This 16-song cycle explores themes from Homer’s Odyssey which are palpable in the context of contemporary war and representations of war (particularly through news media and film). This piece was performed at the Portland Institute of Contemporary Arts TBA Festival in 2003, as well as at national venues (Ladyfest Texas, Knitting Factory LA and NY, Queer is Folk Festival, Chicago). She is currently ...
