Canadian singer Terri Clark is often compared to Shania Twain mainly because the two are Canadian, started around the same time, and began their careers in country music. But while Twain went on to uber status with a mainstream merging of country and pop and rock, Clark slowly built her career on Nashville's Music Row and its contemporary yet safe country sound. This collection featuring her better moments starts with "Better Things to Do," a standard country-pop tune that has the singer opening up vocally from the onset. Take a look at the title of Rhino's 2004 Dwight Yoakam collection -- this is The Very Best of Dwight Yoakam, not The Greatest Hits, which means that there are several hit singles missing. Actually, there are a grand total of 20 charting singles missing, the exact length of The Very Best Of and certainly more than can be winnowed down to a single-disc overview of his biggest hits. Inevitably, cuts had to be made, and the decision was made to span his entire career, coming at the expense at some of his earlier, bigger hits, which means this may not appeal as much to listeners who are familiar with Dwight from the time he had a steady string of singles in the country Top Ten. Instead, this collection skews toward a crossover audience -- or, to be frank, rock guys who like Yoakam. In that regard, it's a success, giving a good idea of the range of his music, offering his biggest hits, along with popular countrified covers of "Suspicious Minds," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," and "I Want You to Want Me." Ralph McTell was at the forefront of a British singer-songwriter movement in the late '60s and early '70s that drew more from American roots music and less from the traditions of the U.K., creating a leaner, more working-class balladry. Over the years McTell has been anthologized more than a few times, yet few single disc collections have really been able to capture the scope of his massive career. THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION seeks to be just what its title suggests, but skips over the first few years of his career and collects sides recorded between 1974 and 2001.
