(1 Customer Review)
In the decade since his post-Fugees solo debut Wyclef Jean has become as well known as an activist as a pop artist. CARNIVAL II: MEMOIRS OF AN IMMIGRANT reflects Jean's political commitment in its detailing of immigrant experience, but not without also turning in an album of bright, eclectic, and continually inventive music. Reggae, Latin, and South Asian sounds can be heard amid the hip-hop and R&B, creating a multicultural pastiche that perfectly suits Jean's lyrical message.
CARNIVAL II is star-studded affair, with everyone from Paul Simon to Mary J. Blige to Nora Jones to the Minister Louis Farrakhan making guest appearances. There's plenty of the smooth rapping and pop smarts that Jean fans expect, but the arrangements and production for the disc set it a cut above. "Riot," featuring dancehall king Sizzla and System of a Down's Serj Tanikan, is a highlight, as is "Hollywood Meets Bollywood," a track that features the Southern MC Chamillionaire.

| | Hall & Oates Do What You Want Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall John Oates CDs (2009)
Carnival II: Memoirs Of An Immigrant
$38.65 It's telling that DO WHAT YOU WANT TO BE WHAT YOU ARE, Sony/Legacy's comprehensive, career-spanning Daryl Hall and John Oates box set, takes its title from a moderately successful mid-'70s single from the duo, written and recorded just as the group was hitting their creative stride. The slow Philly groove of "Do What You Want Be Who You Are" may have hearkened back to the duo's soul roots, side-stepping some of the outré pop experiments they had done just two years earlier on War Babies, but Hall & Oates took the title's sentiment to heart, blurring boundaries between rock, pop, and soul in a way that wasn't always easy to appreciate at the peak of their popularity in the '80s. During that decade, Hall & Oates were omnipresent, seemingly dominating every radio format and MTV, racking up so many hits that it was easy to overlook how "Private Eyes" wore bright, angular New Wave threads, or how "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" pulsated on electronic rhythms, not to mention the duo's earliest folk-rock records. DO WHAT YOU WANT TO BE brings all this into perspective, rounding up all the group's big hits and ...
| | Portishead Dummy CD (1994)
Carnival II: Memoirs Of An Immigrant
$11.49 Named for a town near Bristol, England, Portishead is a British dance band that grabs ideas from all over the mod pop world (spaghetti Western guitars, turntable scratching, melancholy soul vocals, atmospheric organs, house beats) and stirs them into spacey, dub-like productions that sound like a dance club in the middle of a "Twin Peaks" dream. You could call it surreal hip-hop pop. But if the beats on the band's debut album achieve a kind of trance-like static, the songs themselves reach for something more rousing. With understated lyrics and overstated ...
| | Sum 41 Does This Look Infected? CD (2002) Edited
Carnival II: Memoirs Of An Immigrant
$12.65 Often lumped unfairly into the same pop-punk bag as Green Day, and sometimes even dismissed as nothing more than A Blink-182 rip-off, Sum 41 definitively separates itself from the pack with DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED?. Sporting a level of sheer musicianship that dwarfs that of the aforementioned groups, the band powers through all 12 tracks with a machine-like efficiency and a thrash metalesque knack for rhythmic precision and complexity. In fact, there are instrumental passages here that could easily pass for MASTER OF PUPPETS-era Metallica or even vintage Anthrax.
To be sure, there are the usual heaping helpings of catchy melodies and Descendents-approved high harmonies throughout, but DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED? reveals an increased emphasis on the punk half of the punk-pop equation. Echoes of pioneering hardcore/metal hybrid bands like Killing Time, Leeway, and Bad Brains abound, and the record consequently has a tougher, more substantial feel than any of Sum 41's previous efforts.
Sum 41 album three, Does This Look Infected?, is much like Sum 41 album two, which was much like their lesser-known indie debut, Half Hour of Power. Which means, Does This Look Infected? sounds much like the work of Blink-182's snottier kid ...
