Brooklyn's Bear in Heaven has all the hallmarks of the worst pretentious, overdramatic quasi-prog that cluttered the indie landscape in the late `00s, and none of the missteps. Yes, RED BLOOM OF THE BOOM is a song cycle of great ambition, but where their contemporaries' choices sound overwrought, Bear In Heaven's are natural and musical. Look no further than "Bag of Bags" a virtual symphony of tremolo, noise, harmony, and crescendo that through each of its many movements never loses its center nor the listener's adoration and gratitude. This is a rare album by a rare band where breadth of vision matches depth of talent.

Uncut (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Bear In Heaven experiment with loping dub, Faust-like tape loops, and syrupy vintage synthesisers....They appear quite immersed." It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction ...

| | Sonya Robinson Fly CD (2009)
Red Bloom Of The Boom
$14.79 The late great jazz trumpeter Miles Davis said Sonya’s playing is reminiscent of Stuff Smith and Ray Nance, two of jazz’s legendary violinist’s. Robinson is a gutsy player with a beautiful sound and a fluidity that displays her technical finesse. Fans of Sonya have literally jumped out of their seats upon hearing the excitement that Sonya generates with her violin playing. They feel the raw emotion within her music. Sonya, who has two albums to her name, Sonya and Sonya Live at Spiral, plays a variety of styles from new age, the blues, straight ahead and beyond. A fluent composer, she writes and performs most of her own music. A for Black is a song that features her trio-violin, drum and bass. It is a rollicking piece that moves with grace and speed and features the violin in its favorite key, a minor. Truth and Honesty is ...
