Fans of sunshine pop and complex PET SOUNDS harmonies will appreciate Brad Laner's post-modern take on the form. Essentially a one-man work, this debut solo effort from the Medicine guitarist runs on an engine of collage-like production and multiple cultural reference points, achieving its own fractal grace. It's easy-listening music with arduous origins.CMJ (p.7) - "He sounds here like the left-coast boy he really is, spinning sunny pop sundries out of his ever-innovative guitar playing and gauzy production." | | Trembling Blue Stars Last Holy Writer CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Neighbor Singing album
$15.25 Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes a difference here is a boost in the overall energy level from unrelenting gloom to mostly sad, a slightly expanded sonic palette that makes room for field recordings and a wider range of drum sounds, and ...

| | Jann Levinson Jewels Of Light: Sound Images For Solo Piano CD (2005)
Neighbor Singing songs
$15.15 Jann Levinson composes and performs original music designed to soothe the soul and touch the heart. She makes her home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where nature is her muse, and the majesty of the Grand Teton Mountains and Yellowstone National Park inspire her neoclassical works for piano and orchestral instruments. Her passion is writing in sound what sacred places like these and others evoke in her senses, her heart and her soul. Jann's first two recordings, "Teton Seasons" (1997) and "Sunrise" (2000), are invitations to experience nature and to connect with the Earth through pictures painted with sound. Her newest release, "Jewels of Light" (2004), allows the gentle tones of a grand piano to wash over the listener's day and revive or renew the inner chakra system. For Jann music is love. She has known this since early childhood lying on the Oriental rug in the living room listening to her very first symphony with her Grandfather Ray. Shortly thereafter, Jann met her first muse as an elementary student using a silent wooden keyboard. She went on to study classical piano and music composition in New York City. A graduate of Bard College, she was privileged to work there with award-winning composer Joan Tower and the Da Capo Chamber Players. Ms. Levinson's CDs are being used by traditional and alternative healthcare practitioners worldwide, to relieve stress and promote physical and emotional healing for their patients. Spiritual retreat centers, yoga studios and spas have also discovered the soothing qualities of Jann's music. Many of this country's national parks feature her CDs in their gift stores. "Snowbow" from her "Sunrise" recording received the 2002 Second Place Finalist Award in the Solo Instrumental Category from Just Plain Folks, the Internet's largest community of independent musicians. For the full passion and immediacy of the music, Ms. Levinson ...

| | Ghost Overture CD (2007) With DVD
Neighbor Singing CD music
$15.65 At sunset on the night of October 9th, 2006, a crowd gathered at Nippon Yusen Soko, a converted warehouse space located on Yokahama Bay. The performance space was chosen for its sonic qualities such as natural reverb as well as its resemblance to Potala Palace in Lhasa. Band members were spaced apart to prevent eye contact & allow distance for the reverberations to unfold between them. The CD performance is an edited version of the evenings events/the DVD is a completely live, four-camera view into the collective journey of Ghost & their audience.
This two-disc package showcases the mysterious majesty that is Japan's Ghost in new ways to American audiences. Containing one CD and a companion DVD, Overture: Live in Nippon Yusen Soko 2006, documents a single evening performance at a former warehouse space that has been converted into an art gallery. The band lined up in parallel in front of the audience, hidden from them and one another by large draped lace screens. Not being able to see one another, this set is an improvisation, one track, 56 minutes. It is slowly evolving, mysterious, haunting in places, noisy in others. It begins ominously and slowly, creeping, and is never hurried. At first just some percussive sounds and single guitar notes, eventually everything from reeds and woodwinds, stringed instruments, and throat singing to chanting, as well as other instruments which are introduced and disappear. Apparently the performance ...
