(1 Customer Review)
The Los Angeles-based Mexican-American group Akwid fuses Spanish-language hip-hop with regional Mexican music for a fresh, cross-genre hybrid. The group's 13th release, LA NOVELA has a heavy norteno flavor, thanks in part to cameos by norteno outfits Los Tigres del Norte, Tucanes de Tijuana, and others. The mixture of bouncing beats, accordion, bajo sexto, and rapid-fire rhymes in Spanish is a fun, intoxicating synthesis of cultures, traditions, and sounds. | | DRAINAGE X Pain CD (2007)
La Novela CD music
$15.05 Drainage X's sound comes from many years of combined experience. We keep our music heavy but courageously intimidating at the same time. Whether you're listening to one of our CDs, or watching us live in concert, we guarantee you'll never forget us. Drainage X live is a production in itself, with dancing "Vampire Girls" who interact with the crowd, and "Giant", the biggest little man in the world, who hurls Skittles and other candy into and at the audience. We usually provide food at our shows, which is greatly appreciated by our fans, as one of our primary sponsors is Port Of Subs.Drainage X started in November 2002, and is originally from Lancaster, California. We are currently based in Las Vegas, Nevada, and have been for several years. Crystel Sins (the Drainage X manager) created the band by bringing together a couple of great musicians she knew professionally (Animal [lead guitar] and Spider [bass]) with Evil (lead vocals), a man who she knew had the drive, dedication, and determination to make Drainage X a success. Blood Bath, the 2003 EP, was written by Drainage X during eight long months in the garage, after which we were prepared to begin doing live shows and touring. The response was overwhelming, and it was at that point that we knew we had something special. Audiences everywhere loved the sound, make up, costumes, and live show presence of the band, and we were encouraged to continue writing, performing, and perfecting the band. We began entering, and subsequently winning, multiple "Battle of the Bands" shows, both locally and nationally. Drainage X has been represented and recognized by awards at such shows as The New York International Music Festival (2004) which included bands from both coasts, and Schooners, a venue in Lancaster, California. We played our first show in Las Vegas on Halloween, 2003, while we were still living in California. As the band became unified as to goals, style, and sound, we underwent several personnel changes, but have assembled a line-up which is here to stay. We are proud of the fact that we have all of the original "core members", and have made it through a whole lot of "drummer drama" to get to where we are now. Before Drainage X, Evil (lead vocals) played guitar in a death metal band called Dead Weight. He listened to music like Death, Dio, Black Sabbath and Pantera. These influences can be heard in the music he writes for guitar in Drainage X. Animal(lead guitar) studied musicians such as Jimmy Page, Michael Schaenker, Joe Satriani, David Gillmore, and Frank Zappa. Spider (bass guitar) has a more funky side, and been inspired by the likes of Les Claypool, Geddy Lee, ...
| | Blondie No Exit CD (1999)
La Novela music CDs
$9.55 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
After a 17-year recording layoff, one might assume the members of Blondie would be a bit rusty. This is not the case on NO EXIT, the band's seventh album of new material. Four of the original five members are intact, and time seems to have only improved the Blondie sound.
"Maria" is perfect pop, an infectious radio-friendly single. "Forgive And Forget" has jungle drums and electronic rhythms primed for the '90s dance market. The title track has Debbie Harry trading raps with Coolio; ironic, considering it was Harry who helped propel rap into the top 40 in the early '80s. The diversity of musical styles gives the album a widespread appeal. Rap, ska, dance, jazz, rock, country and African genres are all represented. Although the band helped pioneer the new wave movement along with The Cars, B-52's and Talking Heads, they have ...
| | Os Mutantes Live At The Barbican Theatre: London 2006 CDs (2007)
La Novela songs
$15.49 Os Mutantes didn't merely run though their hits, they played them with fire, humor, astonishing finesse, and creativity, revealing the sincere dearth of the same that exists on the rock scene (indie or not) at this moment in time. Dias is a better guitarist than he's ever been. His playing has lost none of its quirky yet utterly sophisticated charm. And in the intricate vocal harmonies on display in tracks like "Tecnicolor," "Ave Lucifer," "I Feel a Little Spaced Out," "Virginia," "Cantor de Mambo," and "A Mainha Menina," may have indeed influenced those soaring moments in Queen's middle period material. But it isn't just the influence that Os Mutantes have had upon so many acts, it's their stunning musical sophistication in performance. They are the true intersection where samba, psychedelic rock, doo wop, folk songs, classical music, and guerilla theater meet. Along with Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, and others, they created a musical and artistic environment so powerful it threatened a government. This is music one has to hear to believe, let alone comprehend. It moves the listener out past any preconceived notions that the Mutantes were able to do what they did in a recording studio but could never pull off live. The show, as divided by the two discs, has a thread running through it that moves the audience from one place to another to another and another until they are so utterly seduced and overwhelmed they are exhausted. A lot is being made of the guest performances of Noah Georgeson and Devendra Banhart on "Bat Macumba," but they don't add all that much, and that's not to take away from their contributions, either. It's simply that they aren't capable of adding much to this kaleidoscopic array of wild fun and musical genius. "Bat Macumba" rocks like a mother, but it's that cooking band that makes it all happen. The addition of Duncan -- a recording artist in her own right for Universal -- is a coup. Her range and ability to shift her focus from lead to harmony, to change tempo, key, and mode on a dime makes her a boon for this group. Her own foremost moments on "Tecnicolor," "Caminhante Noturno," and "2001," where samba meets calypso meets acid-damaged rock and sci-fi doo wop are mindblowers. Forget what you know or what you don't. If you've not listened to Os Mutantes before, this is a great place to start: you can hear the studio records, amazing as they are, later. If you own the studio records, they will not adequately prepare you for what's on display here. ~ Thom Ju
In 1993, Kurt Cobain made a valiant and formal attempt to get Brazil's Os Mutantes to reunite. He failed. Om Platten reissued the band's recordings officially in the United States and they sold like hotcakes globally, fostering all kinds of interest in the most psychedelic of the tropicalia lot but not a peep from the band. In 1998, Beck popped out ...
