$13.29 I'd call this album "The Best Russian Nostalgy" album for listeners out of Russia or even in Russia. People don't much records Russian folk songs anymore. Most wanted in Russia now days is rap-hip-hop music, and Limpopo does not go that way!REVIEWDear Igor,Many thanks for you two sample CDs, which arrived today. I think we willinclude either one or both of them in our CD Buying Guide in the "Otheritems of interest" section. How big a quantity must we order in order toqualify for a better discount? Now allow me a few impressions. I like "Give Us a Break" better than "Traffic Jam". I appreciate the wit and (musical) humor--singingharmonies in the "wrong" keys, etc--, even while you preserve the folktunes in their characteristic and recognizable likeness. I also seeelements of "Weird Al" Yankovich and... Frank Zappa! You see, being aRussian-American of the "second" wave, I grew up in Southern California(Glendale) during the 1960s and 1970s, when all that musical crazinesswas starting to happen; I know who both Frank Zappa and John Cage are.But in the second CD I already see many more elements of Western tastesand styles. You have to understand that, although I grew up in America, somethingdeeply Russian has been planted in my soul and spirit. I understood thiswhen I heard Dmitry Pokrovsky for the first time in Russia, where I wasgathering materals for my book "Choral Performance in Pre-RevolutionaryRussia." (Subsequently, I developed a certain degree of closeness withDmitry and his ensemble. Shortly before his untimely death, I sat withhim here in Connecticut and discussed possible plans for publishing someof his folklore transcriptions.) I grew to be a great admirer ofPokrovsky, Slava Shchurov, the Russian Druzhina Ensemble, etc., and mydream was always that, freed from the Socialist yoke, Russian folk musicwould give rise to ...

Cortijo's Tribe
$11.15 For an instant, only energy existed as the tremendous heat of the explosion (1 x 1032 degrees) unified everything. As space erupted, matter, energy, and time itself were created. In the first seconds of time, the early universe expanded and cooled to 100 billion degrees, and protons, neutrons, and electrons began to take form. Within moments, as temperatures plunged to 1 billion degrees above zero, small atomic nuclei began to take shape as protons and neutrons began to interact. After 300,000 years, temperatures in the universe had dropped below 3,000 degrees and neutral atoms were formed as electrons combined with the atomic nuclei.Gravity and the other fundamental forces were also created in this explosion and they began to cause the early atoms to pull together into dense clouds called nebulae. Over time, ...

Personnel: Benny Mardones (vocals); Mike Jackson (guitar); Jim Brickman (piano); Kinny Landrum (keyboards); Dean Rispler (bass guitar); Mark Levy (drums); D.L. Byron (background vocals). "This record was initially recorded as the soundtrack to the documentary, Into the Night: The Benny Mardones Story, writes Benny Mardones, in his liner notes for A Journey Through Time To those listeners outside of Syracuse New York, where Benny Mardones lives, he makes clear that he is, in his own words, "a superstar," playing to audiences of thousands on a regular basis. The fact that Benny Mardones has a documentary about his rise, fall, and comeback is a shocker. But there is a documentary, and there are thousands of Mardones' fans out there, nearly all of them won over by "Into the Night," his 1980 ballad that was a top 20 hit twice in the '80s -- peaking at number 11 the year of its release, and making it to number 20 in a re-recording in 1989 -- and the song has been a staple of American radio, earning over four million spins in the U.S. according to ASCAP. "Into the Night" is an enduring single whose popularity is greater than its chart position, and its status was helped considerably by the support of the radio talk show host Delilah, who kept it as a staple on her adult contemporary syndicated talk show. There was an audience for Mardones' documentary, by the way. It is a phenomena that has only been shown at screenings and, as of this writing in May 2003, has not been released theatrically or on video -- and that audience of diehard fans is the same audience that will be interested in this almost-soundtrack, a collection of 13 songs from Mardones' career. This functions a bit as a musical biography, but it's a newly-written one, since all of the songs are new recordings. Mardones takes the tactic of recording ...
