Biquini Cavadao: Ao Vivo video
$15.15 Celtic Woman, initially a one-shot collaboration by six leading Irish vocalists for a 2004 PBS special, struck a chord of adoration for the Emerald Isle, a fancy affecting both sides of the Atlantic, and swiftly became a permanent collective. THE GREATEST JOURNEY captures many of the best moments of elegant harmonizing by the act, from their serene and rapturous take on Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to the mournful yet poppily uplifting indigenous folk of "You Raise Me Up."
Import pressing includes two bonus tracks, Mo Ghile Mear (Live From Slane Castle) and Spanish Lady (Live From Slane Castle). Since their beginning in 2005, Irish vocal phenomenon Celtic Woman have sold 4 million units worldwide and occupied the #1 spot on the Billboard World Music Chart for a record-breaking 90 consecutive weeks. The Greatest Journey: Essential Collection represents the band's first Best Of collection and includes four new songs ('The Call', 'Pie Jesu', ...
| | Dead Can Dance CD (1984) Reissue; Special Edition; Extended Play
Biquini Cavadao: Ao Vivo film
$11.99 On the evidence of this, the band's first record, Dead Can Dance can clearly be seen as a "Goth" group in the vein of Bauhaus, et al. The band's sound here is much more clearly based in the "contemporary"--Dead Can Dance uses traditional song structures, the group's instrumentation is almost entirely synthesized, and co-vocalist Lisa Gerrard's voice rarely gets into the truly ethereal, other-worldly realms that it would on later albums. Perhaps the most surprising single song on the album is "East of Eden." Built on a picked (and heavily echoed) guitar line and a rolling drum pattern, it is probably the only track in the DCD catalogue that can be described as relentlessly perky.
Standouts include "The Fatal Impact," ...
| | Victor Jara Antologia Musical CD (2003) Remastered; Remastered Edition
Biquini Cavadao: Ao Vivo review
$20.95 ANTOLOGIA MUSICAL collects the best-loved tracks from legendary Chilean folk artist and political prisoner Victor Jara, on two CDs.
Chilean singer Victor Jara's tragic death in 1973 (following the overthrow of Salvador Allende's government) robbed the world of one its most humane voices. A leading light in South America's nueva cancion movement, Jara wrote passionately and courageously about the rights of the downtrodden, but he also composed wonderful love songs as well as a handful of songs that displayed his wry sense of humor. This 45-track, two-disc collection was drawn largely from vinyl and cassette sources, since the master reels of most of Jara's work have long since been either lost or destroyed. The sound here is decent, though, with only the occasional pop or click, and now and then a little noticeable tape hiss, but in a way it all adds to the intimacy and importance of these tracks. Not that Jara needed any help in the intimacy department, since his singing delivers an easy and comfortable warmth all on its own. Included here is one of Jara's greatest pieces, "Manifesto," written just days before his death, and obviously intended to be a kind of summing up of his work. ~ Steve Leggett
2CD anthology from legendary Chilean folk singer-songwriter/political prisoner includes unreleased tracks. Victor Jara packed a lot of living in his incredibly short life. He lifted himself ...

| | Vanessa De Mata Sim CD (2007)
Biquini Cavadao: Ao Vivo movie DVD
$11.29 Sim is Vanessa da Mata's third album and the first after the huge commercial success of Essa Boneca Tem Manual, from 2004. If Essa Boneca Tem Manual was a blatant, although undeniably very successful, appeal to pure commercialism and the radio hit lists, Sim is a firm step back towards a more intellectual approach to Brazilian pop music. Liminha, who produced the last album, has been substituted by the hip and hyped production duo Kassin and Mario Caldato. As usual when Kassin is involved, the result is an excellent and very fresh sounding production which manages to give a very modern impression without appearing fake or overproduced. Sim was partly recorded in Jamaica, and reggae is indeed one of the primary themes of the album. "Vermelho," "Ilegais," and "Absurdo" are all pure reggae songs. And as a bonus, Sly & Robbie, one of Jamaica's most acclaimed and prolific producer teams, contribute on five tracks. A less welcome guest appearance is that of Ben Harper, who lends his voice and English lyrics to "Boa Sorte/Good Luck." The purpose of Harper's presence is undoubtedly to keep the attention of the mainstream teenage crowd, who first discovered da Mata through the success of Essa Boneca Tem Manual. It has to be said, though, that in spite of Harper, "Boa Sorte/Good Luck" is actually a quite nice song. "Baś" with its imposing and danceable Afro-beat is one of the real highlights of the album. As is the opening reggae ...

Biquini Cavadao: Ao Vivo video
$10.89 "()" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and for Best Recording Package.
With critical darlings Sigur Ros releasing an album called ( ) that features eight untitled songs, this Icelandic outfit continues to go against the grain in a manner so esoteric that it's easy to imagine the band's oft-cited influence on Radiohead. Ironically, the vocals here depart from the previous albums' Robert Smith-like tones for a sound highly reminiscent ...
