Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 5 CDs (2008)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 3: Rhythm and Romance buy CD music Fats Waller was one of the most charismatic American musicians of the 1930's and early `40s. Waller also wore many hats, including those of pianist, organist, singer, songwriter, bandleader, and entertainer--a star of stage and screen. He was a brilliant pianist who sang in an irreverent rasp, and though he was a serious musician, he was also a jovial showman. Many of his best-known songs (along with some nifty rarities) are present on this four-CD package. This set is obviously not for the casual fan, but for devotees of Waller and jazz historians, this is a figurative gold ...

Ben Pollack Vol. 5 - Ben Pollack CD (2002)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 3: Rhythm and Romance CD music Although it had shifted from being a jazz group to being a dance band with the rise of the Depression, Ben Pollack & His Orchestra was still an impressive group in early 1931. Trombonist Jack Teagarden was its star soloist and the band contained the nucleus of what would become the Bob Crosby Orchestra a few years later, including tenor saxophonist Eddie Miller, altoist Gil Rodin, guitarist Nappy Lamare, and drummer Ray Bauduc. In addition, Benny Goodman and Jimmy Dorsey made guest appearances with the ensemble on some of the recording dates. So listeners with an open mind toward the many vocals and arranged ensembles will find moments to enjoy during these performances, including a variety of brief solos. The best selections are "Loveless Love," "Sweet and Hot," and "Beale Street Blues." This entry in Jazz Oracle's very complete Ben Pollack series has music released originally as by Pollack, Gil Rodin, Jack Teagarden, and the New Orleans Ramblers, all using virtually the same personnel. In addition, the 16 selections are augmented by eight alternate takes. ~ Scott Yanow
This is the fifth volume of a six volume chronological study of Ben Pollack. The CD features Jack Teagarden, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Eddie Miller, Charlie Spivak, Gil Rodin, Nappy Lamare and others. The music ranges from hot sides of superb jazz per

Ben Pollack Vol. 4 - Ben Pollack CD (2002)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 3: Rhythm and Romance album for sale The fourth volume in Jazz Oracle's Ben Pollack reissue program covers the period right after Benny Goodman and cornetist Jimmy McPartland had departed. They were soon replaced by clarinetist Matty Matlock and trumpeter Charlie Teagarden, but the main star throughout is trombonist/singer Jack Teagarden. This CD has 13 selections recorded by Pollack's Park Central Orchestra and by the same basic group under the names of Gil Rodin and Jack Teagarden, plus ten alternate takes. Because Pollack sought to balance the commercial with the artistic, there are vocalists on every song, including Smith Ballew, Scrappy Lambert, Eddie Gale, and (on three unfortunate examples) Pollack himself. Fortunately, Jack Teagarden gets to sing on five of the numbers, including (under Rodin's name) "Beale Street Blues" and two versions of "If I Could Be With You." (plus three alternate takes). There are enough worthwhile moments (particularly from Teagarden) to make this a worthwhile acquisition for fans of classic jazz, but the Ben Pollack Orchestra rarely lived up to its great potential. ~ Scott Yanow

Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 6 CDs (2009)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 3: Rhythm and Romance CD music The sixth volume of Fats Waller's THE COMPLETE RECORDED WORKS covers 1940 to 1942, the last years of Waller's life (he died in '43). Yet Waller was as vital during this period, as both a piano player and singer, as he'd been in the late `20s and early '30, as evidenced by these recordings of signature songs like "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose" and classic party numbers like "You're a Viper (the Reefer Song)." The five discs that make up VOL. 6 are as essential as any in his catalogue, and few performers--even decades later--have matched his exuberance and skill as an entertainer.

Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 4: New York Chicago Hollywood CDs (2008)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 3: Rhythm and Romance buy CD music Jazz pianist and singer Fats Waller belonged to a time and generation when being a pure entertainer did not have negative connotations. To be sure, Waller was an amazing pianist and organist and a witty, jolly singer. His style was gregarious and freewheeling, and while he was serious about his music--with several of his songs becoming standards--he never took himself too seriously. This volume of COMPLETE RECORDED WORKS (four discs) contains many of Waller's best and most popular songs, including "Honeysuckle Rose," "The Sheik of Araby," and "On the Sunny Side of the Street." There are also these lesser-known gems: "Boo-Hoo," "In the Gloaming," and "Everyday's A Holiday."
