Drag racing east from L.A. in a souped-up '55 Chevy are the wayward Driver and Mechanic (singer/songwriter James Taylor and the Beach Boys' Dennis Wilson, in their only acting roles), accompanied by a tagalong Girl (Laurie Bird). Along the way, they meet Warren Oates's Pontiac GTO-driving wanderer and challenge him to a cross-country race--the prize: their cars' pink slips. Yet no summary can do justice to the existential punch of Two-Lane Blacktop. Maverick director Monte Hellman's stripped-down narrative, gorgeous widescreen compositions, and sophisticated look at American male obsession make this one of the artistic high points of 1970s cinema, and possibly the greatest road Cult film director Monte Hellman follows up his legendary westerns THE SHOOTING and RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND with another bona fide classic, this time set on the paved highways of early 1970s America. Making their acting debuts, musicians Dennis Wilson and James Taylor play a pair of drag-racing drifters who battle against willing competitors all along the back roads of America, encountering a wild cast of characters. After stopping for lunch one afternoon, Taylor (The Driver) and Wilson (The Mechanic) discover a young woman in their back seat (Laurie Bird, credited as (The Girl). The newly formed trio continues to head east, and places a risky bet with Warren Oates after bumping into each other at a gas station. The first automobile to arrive in Washington D.C. is the winner. The prize: the loser's car (Taylor and Wilson drive a 1955 Chevy, while Oates pilots a 1970 Pontiac GTO). Strangely enough, rather than turning into a relentless fight to the finish, none of the participants seem too worried about picking up the pace. In fact, they act as if they're afraid of reaching their destinations, spurning an endless series of sidetracks that turns Hellman's film into a broad existential metaphor and cementing its place as one of 1970s Hollywood's bravest motion pictures. This version is not grainy like the earlier version.A definite improvement over the earlier version.The only reason I didnt rate it 5 stars, because im leaving room for a Bluray version which I hope will be available in the near future.
This is a real classic movie capturing the late 60's and earlier 70's era as it was.Saw it at the theatre when it first came out.

 So-so Movie with Some Cool Cars
Just another cult classic. Movie was OK. Some parts very good, some pretty bad, strange ending. I had feard good things about it and wanted to be able to say that I saw it. Borrow or rent it if you can.

This DVD takes me back!!! FUN
For those who were motorheads back in 1971, this DVD (Two Lane Blacktop) is a lot of fun. This brought back a lot of memories. What's great about the cast is that the statrs are James Taylor(singer), Dennis Wilson(drummer for Beach Boys) and one of the best charactor actor, Warren Oats.

I´m always looking for "cool" films and this is one of the coolest I´ve ever seen! Two guys (Wilson and Taylor!!!!!) driving a cool, dirty street-race car, they don´t say much, often, the motor sound is all that you can hear. A really slow tempo movie through out an early seventies U.S. highway. LOVE THIS MOVIE!
