Trombonist and composer IAN McDOUGALL was born in Calgary, Canada, and grew up in Victoria, leaving there in 1960 to tour in Great Britain with the John Dankworth Band. He returned to Canada in 1962 and began a lengthy career as a freelance player, composer and arranger in Vancouver and in Toronto where, until 1991, he was also the lead and solo trombonist with Rob McConnell's Grammy and JUNO Award winning group, 'the Boss Brass'. Two suites composed by Ian have been recorded by that group - The Pellet Suite and the Blue Serge Suit(e). Ian was also lead trombone and a frequent composer/arranger for the Brass Connection, who won the JUNO Award for best jazz album in 1982. Since the early 1980's McDougall has become even more involved in composition, and his works have been performed by the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra and Choir, the Lafayette String Quartet, and the Toronto Syphony Orchestra, among others. Important compositions include concerti for Bass Trombone, for Clarinet, and for Saxophone, the 3 Canadian Folk Songs for choir and string orchestra, the Brass Trio, and Bells for Brass Choir. Ian now resides in Victoria, where he continues to play, compose, and teach -both in his private studio and also at the University of Victoria, where he is Professor Emeritus. No Passport Required album
$18.99 In 2001 Mother of Pearl began work on SheBOP! A Century of Jazz compositions by Canadian Women. The project's aim was deceptively simple--find Canadian jazz written by women. The result was the better part of a year of intensive research by the group, their friends and total strangers across the country that got the bug. Archives, libraries, used record stores, dusty piles of decades-old sheet music, the minds of Canada's most erudite jazz players, writers and collectors were all ransacked ...
| | Justin Connor Kaliyuga CD (2004)
No Passport Required CD music
$13.69 "This Justin Connor kid is pretty tricky. It's all in his voice. He has that rare quality where you immediately get the impression that he's a songwriter par excellence. Kind of the I-can-sing-but-I-don't-have-to-prove-it thing that the Dylans, Springsteens, and even Becks have done so nicely in years past. When Justin Connor sings something, it sounds important, and it sounds like the voice of wisdom."- 1340mag "Gorgeous post-apocalyptic pop music. Justin Connor is well-schooled in the art of songwriting. 'Kailyuga' exudes a kind of cheery melancholy and tragic beauty that's hard to describe any other way. These are songs for the end of the world - and end that you won't mind at all."- aiding&abetting "Justin Connor's 'Kaliyuga' boldly sets out to go where no CD has ever gone. Though decidedly contemporary and rather quirky in its originality, the music's lush and lovely production work demonstrates how good this record can get. There are surprises throughout with ambient sounds, layers of harmony, unexpected changes, and shifting dynamics. Yet with all of this, the music remains sufficiently pop, a collage of sections and sounds altogether like something from an early 70's concept album...cool, ambitious, overflowing with ideas, a tribute to imagination and technical skill, and well worth a visit."- minor7th Justin Connor's debut album, Kaliyuga, boldly showcases Justin's knack for crafty songwriting, sonic landscapes, and catchy riffs that seek to soothe the senses with a common collective ...

| | Desire The Solo Sessions Volume:1 CD (2006)
No Passport Required songs
$6.69 desire is the solo acoustic chapter of an artist by the name of Cliff Roebuck whom is passionate about composing and performing music that is compelling, thought provoking, and moving. Born June of 1985 and raised in southeastern Virginia, Cliff was introduced to music formally at six years of age when his mother began to teach him basic piano lessons. Cliff demonstrated a great level of reluctance to learn as he had no interest in music during this period of his life. His piano lessons with his mother came to a close at the age of 12 but as is undeniably apparent, it did not close the door to his own unconscious love for music that would develop until he was 13 and finally become a conscious pursuit. It was then that he finally appreciated his mother's persistence! This laid the foundation upon which he has grown and matured. He began to write lyrics and poetry in vast amounts and intended to write music for them but never did until he bought his first guitar when he was 15. Since then (year 2000), Cliff has been writing and performing his own music, maturing steadily at each show's passing. His independent debut album, 'the solo sessions volume 1' released on October 27, 2006 is a collection of some of his favorites he has written since his beginning. In his preparation for recording this album, his decision for the track list was one of the most challenging. All of his favorites would not have fit on one album. As is evident when you consider he recorded 18 tracks, which totaled 78:14 (min:sec) of content and exceeded the replication safety limit of 75 min on an 80 min disc. Although, thankfully, no problems arose. Indeed this will yet again be an issue as he sets out to record his next album due by...who knows when...and continues to write groundbreaking pieces of music that will no doubt make a name for him and identify him as an exceptional musician. It is also fundamental knowledge that his friend and colleague Jamie Cheek recorded this debut album in his home studio located in the outskirts of a place Cliff calls home, which made it very convenient and comfortable. Cliff came in only prepared to be ...
